I used to love eating all fruits, but now for some reason they taste too sweet to me. I can't enjoy eating them anymore. I miss enjoying all those fruits and having all that energy. I've never been much of a vegetable eater. I've always had a sweet tooth, but for some reason the past 3-4 months I can't enjoy them anymore. Now it's more like a punishment to eat!! I've been making smoothies with alot of water, to thin the sweetness down on the fruit, so I can get some in me! I've been eating melons lately, but still if they get really ripe I can't eat them, the only time I enjoy them is when they just get ripe enough to eat. Today for a snack I snacked on some raw corn and raw sweet potatoe. they were o.k. but like I said my taste buds are really messed up!
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem before? Does anyone know what could be wrong and what I could do to fix it? I've noticed I've been detoxing alot better lately, but I don't have the energy like I used to and I get sleepy in the afternoon around 2:00 p.m. I used to be able to go all day long without getting tired at all!! I hate this, it's kind of depressing because it all fills like a punishment!!
Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance and have a great day!

I hate to say this but I have gone off fruit too. I dont want to eat it and when I force myself to, then it upsets my tummy and causes me to suffer flatulence. I am going to give it a break for a few days.

Welcome to a new chapter in your raw lifestyle.

when I first went raw, I made ONLY gourmet dishes, and couldn hardly stand a salad, and I ate tons of olives, now one olive even soaked is way too salty, I can't eat any salt, I hate it. Everything tastes salty to me, and I do love eating fruit, but it often is way too sweet.

I used to make an almond nutmilk shake almost daily with 2 cup almond milk and 5 large dates, now 1 cup almond milk and 1 small date is too sweet for me. it tastes nasty.

So, I am adding water to things too.

You are getting more refined, so just keep adding water to your smoothies, and eating fruit when it is fresh and ripe, and eat less sweet fruits, like you said, melons, and such, you will start to enjoy greens alot more too, and maybe some nuts, although they taste sweet to me now too.

I am eating so differently than I did just a couple of months ago, it is unbelievable, but our tastes will continue to change, and be more and more refined, as we detox more and more, and that is a good thing.

congratulations on the newest part of your raw journey.

Thanks you two for your replys and letting me see I'm not the only one in this position. I didn't know what was going wrong with me? I sure hope it changes though!!
Thanks again,

Since fruit seems too sweet at this point you may find new pleasure in the mild sweetness of many vegetables. Zucchini, carrots, cucumbers, corn, peppers, they all have natural sugars but not overly concentrated like fruit does. Greens tend to be on the bitter side but you may find pleasure in eating them as well. Good luck!

I'm certainly not an expert in this, but I find at different times my body tells me different things and I just go with the flow. I don't really stick to any rigid rule. And my body seems to tell me the right things. I tried 811 but found the sweet fruits made me severly hypoglycemic. Then I ate a high fat raw diet with lots of dehydrated Lydias crackers. Then they were too heavy and the fats seemed to heavy. Now I'm juicing a lot of vegetables with a piece of ginger and one apple. That seems enough. No fat, little fruit. I eat one or two meals with small amounts of added fats. And maybe just a fruit meal if I'm not hungry. Now I might try green smoothies from the version of juicing to get the whole fruit/veg. Trying to keep it simple since I'm so busy!! Its a journey for me and it keeps changing to what my lifestyle is at the time and what my body seems to need.

I noticed yesterday that my bottled water tastes "sweet". I actually looked on the label to see if I was crazy and I got a new kind of water with something added..but no just plain old water ...how odd !!

Beanie,

I am a "go with the flow" rawbie as well. When my body says fruit...I must have fruit. When I'm craving greens...nothing else will satisfy. I started off having fruit or a smoothie for breakfast, large salads for lunch and dinner, and fruit and/or nuts for snacks. Now for breakfast I've been having the peeling from my bitty baby's apple on the way to work, small to medium salads for lunch and even smaller salads for dinner.

I'm still having issues with SAD candy, (I know...I know...) so if one day I have "way too much"...then the following day I MUST HAVE GREENS!

twinee1,

I had the exact same experience with bottled water the other day. It tasted so sweet to me that I thought I had accidently picked up a "flavored" water. How wild is that?!?

Melindaxl,

This is perfectly fine. Your body is just doing its thing ... and forget to tell you about it. Well, actually, it has been telling you. And now you're listening.

There's nothing wrong with you -- don't force yourself to eat what your body doesn't want. There are as many different ways of eating as there are raw fooders. Think of a huge, lavish salad bar -- if each of us went through it, we'd each end up with a different salad depending on what our own individual tastes are. Your "taste" is the way your body is talking to you. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse with that!

If you have Alissa's book, look for different types of salads and greens and veggie dishes to make. Have you tried the marinated greens? They're fabulous. How about chopping up a bunch of veggies and making a full-bodied tahini sauce for them? Explore foods you haven't tried before. Make your smoothies more greens than fruit.

You don't need to eat tons of fruit. Really!!

Have fun with your food. And ... keep following the lead your body's taking; it has intuitive wisdom.

Hi there,
Just wondering whether or not you are having green smoothies? I find that the greens cut the 'sweetness' of just a straight fruit smoothie. Anyways that was just a thought. So at the moment, you're not really enjoying fruit, however what is it that you 'feel' like eating?

Thanks all of you for your info and helping me understand that everything is all right! I'm going to try to eat more tangy fruits, more vegetable, greens and maybe some fats. It's just that When I eat fat's I like lots of salt with them and that's what causes water weight on me. So I do my best on really limiting my fats and salt. Thanks again for everyone's help! Have a great raw day!

Fruit tends to leave an overly sweet aftertaste for me - so I tend to eat lots of vegetable-fruits like cucumber, red peppers, etc, or go on a 1/2 day water fast to flush out the sweet aftertaste.

Green smoothies are indeed a great idea. The greens tend to absorb the sweetness of the fruit and balance out the taste. I used to put watermelon in mine, but thanks to the helpful reminders from some people about watermelon, no longer do that.

try eating like 10 cucumbers a day LOL... cucumber's a fruit.

so is tomato.

so is bell pepper.

mmm, mm. 'bout as sweet as i can take.

try stuffing yourself with greens. really i dare you to over eat them... just try it. i defy you...

...if you're worried about salt, and fat try measuring your intake. i find that if i just 'blindly' stuff my face with things, i'll eat the entire bag of macadamias, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, whatever... but if i practice paying attention to how much i'm consuming. like say 1 avocado in a soup, or 3 tbs. of coconut oil... i end up being more satisfied than if i were bingeing.... same with salt. try a small pinch, less than an 1/8 of a tsp. and substitute other flavorful foods, like ginger, hot pepper, cilantro etc...

i've had two perfectly ripe pears a week apart, and they were delicious... and more than enough to keep me going until next fall LOL...

Thanks rawandnatural & nemo for your help and ideas. I'll try to start eating more greens and vegetable fruits! The only thing is that when I eat those I love to eat them with a dressing, not a sweet dressing though. I get organic tofu and make tofu mayo, that's the only way I can limit my fats and salts. When I have nuts, seeds or avocados on my salad or in a salad dressing they are too heavy for me and make me too tired! Plus I like my good fats with salt, which normally causes water weight for me. I thought maybe since it's organic tofu, it wouldn't be as bad. Actually I seem to digest tofu better then the nuts, seeds and avocados. When I make the organic tofu into a mayo, I enjoy the taste of it and it helps cut my salt down too!! I hope this isn't bad because it actually helps me!! Thanks again you two for your help and concern!! Blessings,

I've been 100% raw for around five months. At first I thought I'd like the gourmet raw food preparations--they were tasty! But my taste for food refined itself so that after a short time, all I wanted was juicy fruits. I wondered a little about the wisdom of this but decided that, hey, it was better than being on my previous SAD (standard American diet). Only being able to tolerate fresh organic fruits, I felt cleaner, lighter, more mentally alert, and had lots of energy.

Now, once in a while I go off fruits. Even though I have a succulent selection of fruits on my counter, when I start to reach for one, my body is a little repulsed and says NO. I think my body doesn't need the sugar. This makes total sense to me. Instead, I start juicing more greens.

I've always heard that fruits are cleansing, which is why they're good to eat in the morning, and that vegetables are healing.

Zinc deficiency is associated with taste anomalies.

Might be worth checking out.

Having said that, as others have noted, eating raw does alter one's palate to a degree.

Thanks you two for your knowledge and info! Arky, thanks again, I'll check into that! I go to a herbalist for my epilepsy, so I'll go and ask her about the zinc deficiency and see if she thinks I got it. Maybe that's my problem, actually I hope it is, so I can get back to eating right and enjoying my fruits again! Thanks again, have a great day!

It's taken me a good month to get arrive on this place's doorstep. At first I couldn't ( didn't ) care a whole lot about what I consumed as long as it kept me from going over any "edge" I felt myself rolling toward.
I _was_ a carbohydrate addict - I had been in insulin resistance for years, was fighting the diabetes monster, and I went for ALMOST anything that stopped that craving: which, by the way, was fat ( nuts or avocados ). I still eat nuts, just not as many, and I've really lain off of the avos. I have no conscious idea "why", other than my body said, "Okay! Crisis is over! Resume normal temperance."

If feels very good to begin to feel more in control of how I think about food, how I process those thoughts, and I'm beginning to see patterns in my thinking right before I partake of anything - which leads me to see that I AM in more control that I THOUGHT...and I like that!

I'm kind of a go with the flow person as well...but I make sure I get stuffed with greens everyday, and then go with the flow afterward. I truely believe in balance in conjunction with going with the flow. I'm heavy on certain items some days, and light on others. However I try and make sure I'm eating moderately from all the types of raw food over the short term.

Also, when I eat as much green as I do...I truely feel satisfied more than if I didn't have greens.

One last thing before I have to go build muscle in the other room ( so fun!)

I've been "cycling" with greens and with fruits. I maintain greens in my diet everyday, but I went through about 10 days where I could not get enough of greens... I ate huge bowls full - over and over. Then, I craved fruit like it was candy and I was pregnant. So, I decided to listen to myself and eat much more fruit. I was happier. Was I happier because it satisfied some non-hygeinic craving in me? I dunno.. I'm not going there! I just tried obeying what my body asked for, and I waited a few days until I did that to make sure it wasn't my emotions wanting "sugar."

Now, after a week of more fruit, I'm ready for more greens!

Will I continue to cycle around? Not sure. I know I also went through a nut cycle - and was glad that was over when it was. lol

Thanks you two for helping me understand on how to eat what my body wants and on how to make it happy without over loading it!! And on how to measure it out without having too much at one time and how eating enough greens blance out the body more. One thing that's been helping me is eating banana chips and eating bananas in soy milk. I'm going to start making almond milk to eat them with, it's just sometimes I run out of them and have to use another option. The closest I live to an organic store is 1 hour away, and sometimes I just have to wait until I and someone has the time to go and get them. I'm not able to drive right now until I go 1 year without having a seizure which next month will be 6 months. The chips are a good snack throughout the day and there not as sweet. The banana cereal is a good meal.
] Well thank for your time and have a great day!!

Melindaxl,

Are you able to order off of the Internet? There are great options now available for people who cannot visit a health food store nearest them.

Say the word, and we'll have enough raw food outlets available for you than you have time to read in one sitting. And... oh.. they look SO good!

you can start here: www.rawfood.com
