View Full Version : having trouble getting carbs...
I dont want to eat fruit. Only very little, and they dont provide good carbs.
It seems grains and sprouted legumes are the only route. Only legume I'll have is mung bean sprouts. Maybe adzuki would also do, but not as much as I heard they aren't as digestible.
If grains are the way to go then Im trying to stay away from gluten. That knocks out the most common grains. The gluten free grains are harder to sprout since they go rancid quicker.. being so small.
And high glycemic starchy veggies are out of the question.

From what I'm reading, the only reason you're have trouble getting carbs is because YOU are restricting them. That's not what this food program is about.
What are you making this so difficult?

There are some starchy vegetables you can eat if this is the only way. Also some less sweet fruits if that suits you better.
I think fruits are a great forms of carbohydrate; can you explain why you think they aren't?? Maybe someone can help you branch out in your choices a bit. Are you trying to mix your OLD food notions with the beauty of RAW??

You likely have your reasons for doing it your way. I am changing up my routine to knock off the sugar because I found out even after 2 1/2 years of raw, I have systemic candida and hypoglycemia. Too much sugar in my diet. I'm don't think fruit is the culprit, likely all the sweet desserts and dried fruits I eat have enabled my body to hold onto these problems. I am following Gabriel Cousens' Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine diet which does not allow any fruits for the first 3 months.
No sugar does conflict with Alissa's 30 day challenge, but I don't think no sugar is a bad thing for some of us. I certainly would not recommend the average person try it when transitioning from cooked food. I think it is a drastic mearsure only to be used if you have candida or hypoglycemia (which can also be caused by candida). Alissa lists Gabriel Cousens in her reading reference list in the back of her book.
Sometimes we have to do something different to bring about the healing we are looking for. Whatever works for us as individuals is what we should be dong.

If you are going to do grains and lentils (forget legumes) keep it raw and sprouted. Use the soaking/sprouting chart in Alissa's book.

Can I asked why you do not want to do fruits? I am just curious why, is it because you do not like the or is it for another reason?
I hope you find what works for you.:)

Superfood powders, like chlorella, provide an additional way to obtain calories.
On a different thread you say "fruits should be about 10 percent of the diet". If you really believe that the raw diet isn't for you. There is no way to be healthy long-term if fruits aren't a substantial part of your diet to some degree. It doesn't have to be that way all the time or briefly to heal certain illnesses, but definitely most of the time. Grains on the other hand should eventually be either eliminated or very minimal. I'm saying all of this based on research of long-term raw foodists all that consume high quantities of fruit.

Lentils? Why not mung beans? Lentils are also a legume.
I heard lentils are less digestible than mung beans.

But mung beans are in a category of their own. Even SAD health advocates swear by them. :D
I'd go for sprouted mung beans and green, beluga and puy lentils. All beautifully coloured and the lentils sprout really fast too.
I'm really curious about why you would say fruit carbs are of poor quality though. Would you have links?

Fruit provide the best carbs. Every cell in your body needs simple sugars. If you take complex carbs your body has to break it down to simple sugars to feed your cells. Why make it do that. I give my body what it needs. Simple sugars.
well simple sugars don't provide me with enough energy. I know because I do kung fu, and when Im just eating fruit it's not enough to keep me going.
They burn too fast, probably have less carbs, or at least a carb that has less energy in them. complex carbs just has more energy in them, and they keep me going.
I know fruit has their place in the raw diet but I just dont think it's all that much as most fruitarians would think.
Maybe some grains are ok.. the non-gluten ones. Sprouted of course. same with the legumes... lentils and mung beans. maybe even adzuki beans. I just havee to eat a lot of fruits to keep me going. I think that's why people who are fruitarians eat a lot of fruit.

Maybe carbs isn't the only thing you need? I remember a recipe of David Wolfe's that he said he has recommended to athletes: Young Thai Coconut Water with Spirulina added. The Young Thai Water supplies electrolytes and whoza whatsit, and Spirulina is packed with all kinds o' energizing nutritive goodies. Give that a try!
