as many of you know, theres many additives that taste good and are great for recipes and are not raw. what id like to ask is whats the cientific and personal standing point for you.

im sporadically using things such as nutritional yeast, soy sauce, tabasco sauce, etc. i confess its mostly when i make a mediocre meal and i need to crank it up a little bit for it to be enjoyable.

on the other hand, what are the alternatives?

ive heard of liquid aminos as the only alternative (others contain gluten or are cooked in some way)

thanks for your time!

As long as the soy sauce is unpasteurized, it will contain live cultures and thus is beneficial to your health.

I recommend this here.

Also, unpasteurized organic misos are another great alternative. I personally am done with nutritional yeast, the brand thats at my healthfood store (Red Star I think?) has added vitamins which are most likely synthetic.

Blessings!

I'm 4 years raw and I'm still doing stuff like that and I feel so great I'm not worried about being a purist.

The raw food police aren't gonna come get you... you just have to figure out if it's working for you...

When I first went raw, I did it cold turkey... If it didn't come from the earth, I didn't eat it. Simple as that. I had a helluva detox. Then it was over, and my Life was just so very amazing.

I felt so happy, so healthy, so friggin' blessed!

And then... I started reading raw recipes that called for these things I hadn't used before, such as Bragg's Liquid Aminos and nutritional yeast.

I got my first stomach ache that way.

But today... now... I make my calls every day. I don't buy nutritional yeast or Nama Shoyu or Bragg's or Tamari. They don't work for me.

Once upon a time, before my body was so Dang Spoiled by such Dang Good Fresh Food, it might have been OK.

Now, I do coconut aminos (made by Coconut Secret, a totally raw & soy-free version of soy sauce), which I loooove. And I do coconut sugar (also raw) on occasion. And I skip the yeast.

But I have this really yummy mostly raw truffle salt that has a "natural truffle flavor". (You know what "natural" means on a package, right? Sigh. They don't even tell you what it really means, and it's kind of a crapshoot trying to figure it out.) I just looove the flavor and use it in small amounts, only on occasion.

All that to say... here are some of the details on my choices... Stina shared (and she's a rock solid one, that lady!) hers, the always funny Dope shared too... but in the end... you just have to go with it. Don't let the stress of choices override your life. Being aware will help. Being prepared and melding your flavors nicely will help too.

:) Good luck to you!

I'll put in another vote for Coconut Aminos.

And I'll also show some more love for le magical Miso. If you're not familiar with Miso, its a tasty fermented soy/rice product, with live cultures, readily available amino acids, and has even been found to contain compounds that protect you from radiation/ heavy metal toxicity. And it makes you radiate with LoveEnergy. Here's my gallery.

You can see each Miso has its own characteristic color and texture, and the same goes for flavor. You can see the leftover marks from me and my brothers fingerscoop bonanza.

Whoa! This is such a great message thread...

I never thought I could spice up raw food diet with these add on. I never thought of myself as purist but I just concentrated on the label raw food. Thank you for this wonderful information.

You can do whatever you want! That's the cool thing... and no matter who says they eat 100% raw... even those folks define what "raw" means with soooo much variation... so in the end it's all just whatever works well for you.
