I bought three kinds of raw organic whole leave seaweeds from Maine Coast Sea Vegetables and found that they all contain debris and dried yellow worms, which are quite difficult to get rid of. I also bought a packet of raw sushi nori sheets from Maine Coast Sea. These are pressed thin sheets. Now I am afraid these sheets also contain ground worms.
Does anyone have a good expereince with a company that sells CLEAN (no worm and debris) raw organic whole leave seaweeds?

I can understand your hesitation with eating them. I would contact them to see if they're willing to do anything-maybe replace them. I've gotten seaweed over the yrs and never had that issue-with them nor any other company.
edited to add: Couldn't contact you privately, but wanted to mention that I have 2 sources for nori on my website that I've only had good feedback on.
Seaweed doesn't come cleaned. It will always contain some kind of sea creatures and things in it. The nori should not be a problem. I get mine from Alissa's site. Nice to support her since she supplies this site free of charge.

Like Dane said, you can always expect there to be some kind of sea creature in seaweed.
That said, lately I've been buying seaweed produced by a company called Algamar (http://www.algamar.com/productos/secas.php?id=2) and it's aways been very clean and high quality. Don't know if it's available where you live though.

Thanks for all the responses.
I called Maine and presented my questions. No they do not clean their products except for Nori sheets. And the yellowish "worms" are shrimps and they claim these shrimps are harmless even when eaten raw. Since their products are supposedly from clean waters, I feel OK now.

yeah, i sometimes have frustrations with sea veg, because I'm vegan mainly for ethical reasons, and I get pangs of frustration when I find the shells of dried out creatures on the dried seaweed...I dont really have a solution for this...even when Ive hand-harvested seaweed Ive had to go through and pick off loads of shells and other crawly things with the intent of putting them back into the ocean before dehydrating the seaweed...and i always end up missing some nonetheless... :/
I have been convincing my husband to buy seaweeds and include it in our diet. But he always refuses because of the cleanliness issue. He doesn't approve of buying seaweeds in our vicinity.
Can I possibly clean seaweeds sufficient to get rid of those 'dirt'?

Emerald Cove sells organic, raw seaweeds from the coast of Japan. All of these worm things sound gross! I've never dealt with that before.

Will you provide a website link to your favorite seller of Emerald Cove? I made a search for sellers and received too many results.

Whole Foods sell raw nori, I do believe.

Fact of life, both of my seaweed packets, made by different companies, say that the seaweed may contain fish or shellfish particles.
So if you are vegan then seaweed ain't for you. If you are not vegan, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Yes. But Whole Foods are expensive. I am trying to find an online seller who charges less.

If you look at the nori at Whole Foods, it says "toasted" nori. At least at the two Whole Foods in my area.....
I think you have to get truly raw ones online.

Sorry I don't know where or if it's online, I buy it at the health food store. I don't have any Whole Foods around here but I imagine it would be there as well.

Thank you. I checked their website. They don't sell seaweeds in bulk.

I know this is kinda off the subject but,I bought 3 packs of seaweed tonight. Two of the packs are dried and one was cold out a fridge. The cold one says fresh salted seaweed. One dried pack says kelp and the other just seaweed. No other ingredients are listed on any of the packets,So i assume they are basic, untampered ocean veggies.
Forgive me for my neivieness if Im wrong.Ive checked the internet and cannot really find anything about it being harmful.Ive never ate seaweed before becomming raw,and my first was the nori sheets.Ive come to really like them.anyhow I took a piece of the cold seaweed out an it was covered in salt,I rinsed this and took a bite, ummm yea not really good,But im eatng for health and I want to incorporate this into my diet.
So are all forms safe to eat?
Does anyone know of some good recipes for it,does it hold up in a smoothie? What else can you do with seaweed?
um, I get Main sea coast veggies.
I stay away from dulse. The only ones I consume are wakame, kelp, and kombu.
I soak them in water for about 20 mins to an hr and rise them well, then I just it eat.

Hi Non, Why won't you consume dulse? Just curious.

dulse seems to have more of the shells and sea life in them.. Im just afraid to eat them. Even when I soak them they still might have that in it.
So kombu and wakame are the only ones I stick with since they are cleanest.

me too. ive even harvested it myself, rinsed it well multiple times, picked off the shells, and tried to return everybody in a bucket back to the beach... but i still miss some even when going through it carefully--which i discover when i open the dehydrator and find shells in it :/ ) , and some little guys (baby sand crabs? or something) go down the drain. i dont have a solution either. too bad cos i love dulse, but i hate what it does to all those critters. the best possible solution ive come up with would be to put the fresh seaweed in some sort of a mesh sack and dunk it multiple times in the ocean. that would get rid of the crawly guys, but id still have to pick off the critters with shells.
i have a similar problem when we go to collect seaweed to use as fertilizer :( its a great fertilizer and i love that its available...but i ended up killing SO many sandcrabs that were living in it just because they were removed from the ocean so they couldnt survive :( ..they were jumping all over the trunk of my car :( BLEH.

I can understand your reluctance to eat. I would contact them to see if they are willing to do anything, can be replaced. I have received in recent years algae has never had this problem with them, nor any other company.
