HI guys,

I bought a Jackfruit for the first time! Never tried it before but it smells wonderful. It has been previously hacked to this large junk.

My question is..how do I prepare it, eat it, and clean up. I read somewhere that Jackfruit is used for glue?

What can you do with it? Lots!

Eat it fresh (it has a wonderful 'juicyfruit' taste to me, and you can chew it like chewing gum).

You can use it fresh in smoothies and frozen in smoothies or ice cream. You can make custards by blending it as well, you can use it in savoury dishes in chunks or as part of a dressing.

WARNING! The thick skin of the jackfruit is filled with latex (that would be the stuff they use as glue, it's the white sticking stringy stuff). Take care in cutting into it, if you get the latex on your hands it could stay there for days, it's hard to get off!

I think it's worth it though! p.s. depending on how big your particular jackfruit is, you might want to get a friend to help you eat it, or freeze the remainder. They grow to gargantuan sizes!

Ok..this is the part that i am worried about. So I eat the yellow stuff..but this "thick skin" is that the horned spiky area...OR the thick middle core or the white stuff that is between the yellow pods?

If I do get it on me will ethanol or acetone take it off?

I want to try one! Does it taste different from a durian? I've never had either!

Bugger!

Typed up a reply but was too slow and lost it when I went to post it!

The main area where the latex is located is in the thick white rind just underneath the green spiky skin. There is some latex inside the jackfruit, along the white spine, but I don't usually get it on me from here.

And yes, I'd say acetone and probably ethanol would remove it, but these are not the sorts of things I carry around so I'm not certain.

Arcturus, it DEFINITTELY tastes different from durian! I must be the only raw foodist, particularly as a high fruit raw foodist, not to like durian. And I LOVE jackfruit!

I'm going to start carrying a Durian everywhere. Keeps nasty cooked foodists away from me!

Plus, makes kids cry. Two for the price of one! :D

Lol, but are you fine with having raw foodists follow you around like puppies?

Like most animals, we act right when we eat right. There is a reason I like puppy dogs. :) They are kinder than most humans. Nor do they start nuclear wars.

The only difference between a puppy and a human is one marks its territory with urine excrements, the other marks its territory with ink excrements (i.e. maps). We are so alike in so many ways! If humans would just eat from the tree to me, we'd have a more natural world!

I've never seen a puppy eat from a tree. (Unless it was eating a critter that was on/in a tree.)

okay so i wonder if you can juice it. i'm guessing no since you say it's like a custard.

True enough, but they eat according to their higher will! Even puppies eat grass! Raw, of course. :D Consider: every animal except us eats raw. And those who don't, we have force fed cooked foods. There is a reason I like most animals more than humans. :) Read Ishmael - Daniel Quinn. Good read!

Since fermenting is all the rage... gives me some ideas for yogurt & kefir mixtures.

Actually, I'm wondering if they could be juiced. What kind of juicer have you got? I have a Champion and I've never considered juicing it, though I'd consider freezing it and making it into an ice cream.

It is juicier than durian.

p.s. here's a pic of one of the ones I ate, they grow really big in Queensland Australia!

i have a champion and a greenstar. i haven't even seen them around here... i'd probably have to order one in special.

Maybe don't order one in until you've finished your fast. ;)

Just in case it turns out you can't juice it!

I see them in the supermarket all the time (same with durians), but nothing beats one fresh of the tree, OMG YUM!!!

FYI: in my country (Indonesia), if you get the latex (from jackfruit) on your hands, you can use oil from palm oil and after that you can wash with water.

i bet klo... everything is so much better fresh!

and ya... i'll wait. i'm water fasting right now... so i couldn't even juice one right now.

Ah... It will be that much sweeter when you do get to eat it then! :D

So genius! I bought a bolo machete recently so I can smash coconuts. :) Go South-east Asia! HULK SMASH.

the pic you posted (on page one of this thread) has soooo much of the yellow fruit. the one i bought yesterday from an oriental market had very very little of the yummy yellow parts.

to get the glue off my hands i washed with soap a few times. came right off. no need for anything more than that.

but the fruit... it was worth it! i'll be buying it again. (but i wouldn't bother juicing it, i doubt i'd get much juice from it)

Cost prohibitive in my area. Saw one at whole foods and now that I see the effort involved I think I will wait.

Not seen them locally but if they are as expensive as Durian then I will have to wait. I like the look of the prep though. I like getting intimate with fruit ;)
