Hello raw-fooders! I am a spanish woman 50 years old and happily eating raw now for half a year. I feel much better than before and don't want never to go back to my eating habbits from before. I really enjoy that finally I could replace the coffee and milk in the morning, for a nice green juice.
But... I did a bloodtest and the doctor told me that my iron level, and also bilirubbin level, are much much higher than the maximum levels 'allowed'. I am on a long waiting list (very normal in Spain) for my case to be studied better, but in the meantime I would like to do something about it myself.
Could anyone help me out in some way?

Mild rises in bilirubin may be caused by:
Hemolysis or increased breakdown of red blood cells
Gilbert's syndrome - a genetic disorder of bilirubin metabolism which can result in mild jaundice, found in about 5% of the population
Moderate rise in bilirubin may be caused by:
Drugs (especially antipsychotic, some sex hormones, and a wide range of other drugs)
I am not sure that taking iron out of your diet will help. What you have to do is let your body heal whatever is causing this.
If this is being caused by the breakdown of red blood cells then it is possible that you need more iron and not less so interfering may be dangerous.

Drugs I don't take, so the cause must be another.
Reading your answer, I will not change my diet!
I thought that was the way to go, but now I understand I first need to find out what cuases the high level of bilirubbin and iron.
Thanks a lot, sport!

I am not a doctor but before doing anything to change with your diet, i would first ask myself: How do i feel? If you feel great, alive and wonderful, then don't worry about the iron level.
The only thing, i would look into is for your water to be the purest you can find. Tap water and even some bottle water are concentrate with heavy metal. One thing that i learned, is that if you have consume supplement minereral or took supplement or have any mineral consumption through food and drink fortified with supplement, you could have deposit in your blood stream. Simply because the mineral isn't angstrom size. If bigger, the body cannot take it. While you are consuming plant with with iron, this iron will help your body to get ride of the over sized iron in you. plant has the angstrom size mineral.
So bottom line, if your diet is working for you and you feel wonderful, i wouldn't change anything and certainly not allow myself to be worry. Your body is wise, and it will do everything to keep you healthy as long as you are helping her with your good attitude and choice with food.
If you have any questionable symptom that you notice with your body then this is time to tune in and figure out what it needs you to do. I would consider to see an homeopath that do raw food.
Congratulations on your raw journey!

Hello Raw Angel Mom,
Thanks for answering!
I drink water from plastic bottles that they sell in the shops, maybe I could look into that and find another solution, I didn't know it can contain heavy metal!
Do you think filtered water from the tap is better than the bottled water? And what about destilled water? I don't know what is the best.
I feel great with the diet, only I feel more tired since the last month, but that could be due to the autumn season - I don't like the cold. I was looking for an homeopatic doctor knowing about raw food, but here there is no-one. I have an appointment though in the beginning of November with a vegetarian homeopatic doctor. Let's see what he will say...
Greetings!

another thing to consider is what kind of doctor are you going to? My mom's normal mainstreamed doctor is really upset over her blood levels but her holistic doctor and is very happy with them.
Try calling around to health food stores and see if they have the recommended levels for health. Yours might be normal??

Go in the internet and check your Water Town Supply REPORT. If they use typical chlore, you can simply filter your water. If they use chloramine (amoniac+chlore), this is very bad news because it is so hard to filter. You need a filter that says on it that it filtered chloramine). I buy my water and filter it again because my town sadly uses chloramine.
We have a machine also that oxygen our water. I place my water that i buy in glass jar with nice Japenese word that says, health, balance, prosperity, happiness, harmony. I swear the water tastes so good. It sound silly but it works for me.
If you buy your water, spring water might be a better option then distille. The plastic of the bottle that isn't refrigerited can free toxic gaz. This is why, i filter my water again or simply purify it with oxygen.
Dr. Emoto conducted many experiment and he proved that water can be purified with positive words, gratitude etc....
p.s I had a head shower filter for my bathroom.
