Are raw sunflower seeds a good sub for cashews in recipes? And maybe for other nuts as well? I've never had them, but I noticed they're about $2 a bag at Trader Joe's whereas raw cashews and almonds there are $5 or $6 for the same amount. Are they as good for you nutritionally? Thanks!

I use them to replace nuts in pie recipes. I mean in the base of pies with dates.

Just try it. If you don't like the resulting product, it may be the stronger flavor/different texture of the sunseeds.
I routinely add raw sunseeds as part of a recipe especially crusts as sport mentioned.

well..sunflowers taste so much different than cashews!
i'd say, for savory dishes, sunflower seeds could be a good sub but for sweet dishes..go with the cashews, or even sesame seeds cuz they're cheaper and taste good when they're sweet

Me too but I know that they are not as healthy as sunflower seeds so made the change in any place where I felt that I would not notice it so much.

I strive to have a variety of different seeds and nuts because they all bring something good to the body. Variety is the spice of life!:)

Thanks for the replies, everyone! It's too bad they don't work well in sweet recipes--cashew kream is my weakness, and I'd love to be able to make it with something cheaper!

-cashew kream is my weakness, !
Have you tried it as an onion dip as per Alissa's book. Just add chopped onions.

Absolutely! Of course it depends of the recipes but i find that raw recipes are so easy to adjust and make substitute.
What is the recipy that you want to do?

Nothing specific, just anything where cashews/almonds are used--kreams, yogurts, cheeze, etc. One of the above posters said sunflower seeds will work for savory but not for sweet dishes, so I'll have to see. I just didn't want to make something and find out it was terrible and waste all those seeds.

Ann Wingmore institute makes their yogurt and cheese with sunflower seeds. I heard that the taste is strong. I guess you will have to give it a try if you want to find out you will like it. Can you cut the recipe in 1/4 and just make a little bit.

That's a good idea, I'll have to try it, thanks :)
