Hey all.

Recently I've been going a lot harder on raw trying to cleanse myself of acne. I've included about 20 oz. of pure green juice into my diet everyday, along with plenty of salad and fruit. I'm a little curious as to what's going on though. I'm discovering blemishes in places I have never gotten them before. This is kind of discouraging. Am I just purging? Does anyone have an idea of how long this will last? 3 years of acne has taken it's toll on me and I've about had it. I'm really hoping it clears up soon. Forgot to mention I'm a 17 year old male so it's more than likely hormonal. Still, I've heard even hormonal acne can be treated with cleansing. Maybe I'm not going hard enough with it? Any thoughts?

Are you still eating any rubbish in your diet or is it all good.

My son is 17 and started drinking green smoothies in the morning and a SAD diet the rest of the day. We are slowing detoxing him because when he ate raw for 1 1/2 days he had a major migraine. But anyways his complexion was good and now he is breaking out all over. I personally think you are detoxing. Drink LOTS and LOTS of water to flush it all out.

Good luck

A smoothie may be made with vegetables like carrots however it doesn't mean it will CLEANSE.

Amazing vegetables that cleanse are radish, radish leaves, chicory, radicchio, lemon, etc.. What the vegetables have in common is that they are BITTER. Bitter vegetables not only cleanse but also kill bacteria and yeast. Sweet fruits juice cleanses are useless because they are loaded with sugars that don't cleanse and only spike insulin levels and when eating them with a high-fat diet cause acne; no offense to whoever thinks fruit cleanses work.

I wouldn't recommend juice cleansing. Eat this salad every second day raw; let the body digest the food on its on. Chew the salad very well. Get refined sugar out of the diet and any foods containing it.

Make a huge salad with radish(cut up into slices), radish leaves, chicory, lemon juice(hides the bitter taste of radish leaves and chicory) and sea salt(not iodized salt). If you can't get chicory, get radicchio.

I may sound crazy but I stand corrected.

I'm 25 and broke out in all sorts of weird places when I first started detoxing.

I also had horrible acne when I was a teen, but that cleared up a bit once I got to my 20's. I still had some occasional breakouts but when I decided to go raw, it got worse for a few weeks.

Give it time. Give your body time to adjust to the changes and you are likely detoxing if it's gotten worse.

I'm eating about 90-95% raw right now. Some days i'll go 100%. I'm in a tough situation right now because my parents aren't big on raw and I've gotta buy my own food so some days I'm low and have to eat cooked. The non-raw stuff is just like steamed veggies, nothing too crazy. I don't consume refined sugars. The only kind of sweetener I use is raw honey. The green juices i've been making have romaine, parsley, chard, and some apple. I've tried making dandelion juice but it is so bitter! Is there anything I can put in a bitter green juice to neutralize it a bit or should I just learn to like it? hah.

i'm gonna have to say that one's hormonal. i'm female and not sure what a male would take for hormones but once i balanced my hormones and started raw, i pretty much became acne-free

I think that you have to have patience and wait for this to work.
When you go raw your body begins to heal itself but it decides what the priority is. It heals the most important and life threatening thing first and then moves down along the list.
Trust it to decide. Before long you will have a clear glowing complexion both inside and out.
Think of it as getting the inside complexion right first.

What worked for me was a mono diet of fruit, like bananas, I had acne for years, it runs it the family. When I went on bananas for 10 days then mostly bananas for the following 3 weeks ALL my acne disappeared. For some it may take a little longer but I don't know any people who eat the way I do who have any skin issues at all. Cooked food is like "stucko" in our bellies and intestines, we are designed to eat foods i.e fruits - that go through our digestion system quickly...cooked food ends up fermenting and putrifying inside, as a result this now toxic matter within gets pushed out of our largest organ - our skin and one reason being that the liver cannot handle the load..

You didn't mention how long you've been doing high raw. If your body is detoxing (which sounds likely) then you would break out in weird places. And it is hormonal. When you clean house, you're going to stir up some dust, and by that I mean your hormones are likely going to go a bit wonky before they settle into being totally awesome and perfect. I'm female so my hormonal breakouts are a wee bit different, but before raw, being on the Pill to get me skin under control at least somewhat, just before that time of the month I might get a single zit in the weirdest place imaginable without
warning. Think nostrils, earlobes, shins, knees. The same thing happened when I went high raw: break outs in the most bizarre places, and they'd always come completely out of the blue, no itching or redness beforehand whatsoever.
So the most likely explanation is detoxing. Having said that, if you don't see improvements in your skin within the next month, I'd suggest you start looking into treating acne more specifically and not just generally being high raw.

Oh I wish my skin would react well with bananas!! I am on a low-sugar cleanse and I MISS bananas like crazy. I've been thinking about that lemon pudding...oh how I miss lemon pudding! I don't even put any dates in mine, just avocado, banana, and lemon. It's my fave and I crave.

One of the most frustrating things about having skin problems is that they take SO LONG to heal. :p My skin hasn't really changed much, because although I think I definitely have a handle on this raw business, I am still relatively new to the diet. Sigh. I think I'll give MSM another try. It's just really frustrating because here I am eating broccoli for a snack, and my roommate is eating all things fried and lots and LOTS of bread, and my roommate's skin is so smooth she could be on a cleanser commercial. But I suppose I have to be patient.

While I am patiently waiting for clear skin, I do want to give some positives to my recent low-sugar cleanse. I've discovered that there are so many things I enjoy that are not sweet. I especially like cabbage and fennel, yay. I'm also eating dandelion greens in my salad, embracing the bitter and feeling satisfied by it. Loofah, I don't dandelion greens interfering with my green juice, but try them in a salad with grapefruits and drizzle of lime juice.

Also, I've heard that avocados aren't good for rosacea people but I canNOT give them up. I mean, geeze! I have to eat something, right?

Hey Loofah,
I bet you are probably detoxing. The first time I did raw my normally good complexion broke out something fierce. I also got zits on the back of my arm, my chest, under my breasts where the underwire sits AND huge deep ones on my thighs. It was a totally WTF? kind of a moment. Then, it just quit about 2 months later.

Are you being gentle on your skin. Have you ever considered a peel for exfolitation purposes? My fave is MYCHELLE fruit peel (the raspberry one). Follow it exactly though as it has acids.

Hey gang? If he has lipophilic toxins (since they are being excreted from sebaccous skins) do you think oil pulling would help him. I have never tried it but as they say in chemistry, "Like dissolves like"

Good luck and do your best to ride it out

add lemon juice to your water all the time- its your new best friend!!:)

the two major contributing factors for acne is toxicity(bad diet) and hormones, but if your liver is in great condition it can counteract the effect of the hormones on your skin. your diet and your liver can also take ccare of the toxins.

I hope this helps you. My skin wasnt so great until I did a master cleanse-its been great since then!!! I know it was the lemon juice that made the difference.

I've tried the master cleanse and I did not do a bit of good for my acne. Currently I'm trying to juice as much leafy greens as I can, specifically dandelion. I think Lou Corona said he cured his acne juicing dandelion. Might as well give it a shot myself. I've heard bitter greens clean the body out nicely and am hoping my acne will disappear in the near future.

Right now all I can do is enjoy my broccoli and red pepper dip and think happy thoughts! :D

Optimism ftw

My two cents-- add 1-2 cucumbers to your green juice everyday. They are great for hydration, and helped my skin a lot. Also grapes (with seeds), watercress, and radishes are good skin boosters when in smoothies or juiced.

I have heard (though never tried it) that washing your face with raw honey is an excellent way to clear up acne. Contact me if you want more info and I'll dig it up...

Smile, you are beautiful, and this too shall pass.

thanks Tguch.

I've actually been using raw honey as a facial wash for the past few days. Seems to be working pretty well. I think many people are put off by the idea of putting honey on your face. I know I was, until I discovered it's actually water soluble. If you just put it on your face and then rinse it off it's not sticky at all, just smooth.

hm.. well I don't really think it's detox. Because you didn't really mention anything else negative.. right?
How much fats are you consuming in your raw diet? You didn't mention that?
Try eating very little fats along with going raw and see what happens.
Try looking up the 80/10/10 diet by dr. graham. he has this video of how many times the problems people get from going on a raw diet are caused from eating too much fat, along with so much sugar from fruits.

I think it really just depends on your body. I actually do better on a low-sugar raw diet, and I usually eat an avocado daily. I save fruit for special occasions and when I really want to party I eat dates, ha ha. The bulk of my diet is veggies, especially leafy greens, and lots of yummy dips. Now I actually crave collard green roll-ups! Once I got on the veggie kick, my skin has really improved.

I believe acne to be mainly caused by imbalanced hormones. Good essential fatty acids (EFA's) help balance hormones. I'd up my intake to good --especially the high Omega 3's - oils to equal 7 TBSP a day. I'd do mostly flax, chia, then some Udo's oil blend, avocados, walnuts, hemp seeds....

With an emphasis on flax and chia.

If not vegan, you may want to try other non-vegan oils for the EPA's and DHA's too.

Best of luck===oh and drink tons of good water. Your body will produce more oils which block your skin to hydrate your skin if you are dehydrated.
