View Full Version : How not to kill myself on raw.

I went to Whole Foods and my thoughts was "You can eat any vegetable raw!" Whole Foods is quite exotic for me with the fruits and veggies you don't see in the average grocery stores. So I had my eye on a pile of Taro roots. I wanted to buy some and some banana leaves. But something told me not to buy and just look this stuff up online. I did. Taro is extremely poisonous if eaten raw. I have no idea if banana leaves are safe raw or not yet.
There are so many things I want to experiment with, but when I go shopping how do I know what is safe to be eaten raw or not? Especially dealing with exotic foods not well known in America?

I take my iPhone or iPad with me to the store. If I need information about a product, I look it up right then and there!
You can ask the store attendants too. If you tell them you're a Raw foodist or only eat raw fruits and vegetables, they will probably be able to help you.

Banana leafs are not really used as food. I think that they are really hard to digest.
They are usually used to wrap and cook food in (giving the food a certain aroma) but also as a plate that the food is served on.

It's not that you will have an immediate reaction to them. Taro roots contain calcium oxalate which over time will cause kidney stones.
Well, you can have immediate reactions to calcium oxalate, but you'd need to eat large volumes of taro roots for that kind of quantity.

Sorry, so late in responding. Haven't been on the board for a while.
Lucky you, I don't have a SmartPhone. Just a plain ole cellphone.
Maybe we should create a thread on food not to eat raw for things might be immediately poisonous, or poisonous to the body over a period of time.
You have made it clear that you like to experiment. Just prolong it a little longer. When you go to a store and want something you are not sure of- then get the name and Google it at home. Even better is to ask people who are on raw diet.
Your suggestion of making a list for raw food diet is a great one! When do we start making the list?:)

I will making a list soon. I haven't been experimenting lately, since I bought a lot of fresh salsa from Whole Foods and have been feasting from trying salsas I have never heard of like smoked chipotle and corn salsa.
