I just have to share! You guys will understand me when you see how excited I was.

Background: we are coming out of a long, cold winter here in Australia, and good, ripe, sweet tasting bananas have been hard to find, which makes me sad. So I search and search and LONG for the warmer weather so I can have my bananas back. The place below is not even one of the places I expect to get good bananas from!

I went and did the fortnightly shopping (or as much of it as I can carry anyways) today at CERES community market and was faffing around in the produce area when, I kid you not, the clouds parted, the sun came out, and I turned and saw the most beautiful bananas I have seen in almost half a year!!!

Here was the lovely sun shining down on the most perfect looking organic bananas, bright yellow with lots and lots of brown speckles (even the number was perfect, I'm such the banana police). And GET THIS!!!

They were on special for $2.50 a kilo! Absolutely perfect organic bananas (and heaps of them)!:D

I got as much as I could carry in my granny pusher (about 4 kilos, 8 pounds?) and laughed out loud when I saw the 'ripe' not on special bananas at $4.50 a kilo. They were 'perfectly' yellow, no spots, and completely unripe (as all-yellow bananas are), and to top it all off, they were not even as good a quality as the on special bananas!

OMG I LOVE knowing the secret to ripe bananas! The rest of the population doesn't, so the ripe bananas go on special and the unripe bananas are at the more expensive price! All because people have gotten so fussy and been trained so see brown spots or marks as making fruits and veg less than 'perfect'.

I LOVE LIFE!!!

p.s. they were delicious! :D

LOL, I can relate. When the ripe bananas go on sale at my co-op....very large bags for a buck total....I feel somewhat like a crooked wall street trader might with a best kept secret. I sometimes take all of them! I agree, we are blessed to know the truth. Glad you made out like a raw foodie bandit.

Lol, thanks RawHeaven. :)

And get this, I've met random raw foodist strangers when we both start 'fighting' over the ripe on special bananas. How's that for 'inner circle secret'!

hahaha...I love it. That happens sometimes at the farmer's market. Most vegans are peaceful until you mess with their food. hahaaaaa! I needed a good laugh thank you.

:Envisioning raw fooders fighting over special ripe fruit: LOL!

I've told many a non-raw friend about the perfectly ripe banana having freckles. I just hope they were listening.

I tell anyone that will hear!

But hardly anyone seems to get it. They are still locked in that 'my fruit/veg cannot have a single spot on it' mode. I know of people who say they hate bananas, but when they taste an actual ripe banana, they like it!

We just have to take advantage of the 'secret' from now until when the word gets out.

But it will get out eventually, and like so many things before, I'll tell my friends and family 'I told you that ages ago!' and they'll conveniently forget I ever did, or have the attitude 'but it came from a doctor this time' or something silly like that.

Sigh... :)

This thread is so funny to me. When I was a SAD eater, I liked my banans just in that stage between green and full-on yellow, and if they had a freckle, forget it. Now that I'm a raw eater though, they sit on my counter, and I tease them constantly, telling them to "hurry up and get spotty already!" Funny how we turn around completely when we start to eat right.

It's funny, I used to love ripe bananas. Brown spots meant it was ready! But for a little while now, I've actually preferred them more starchy and firm, and less sweet and soft. They're in that state for a very short period of time though!! I try and time it, I'll get a couple of bunches of bananas, one that's ready to eat now, and one that will take a few days. But before I know it, they're both too ripe for me to enjoy! On the plus side, I'm ending up with a lot of frozen bananas! :D Banana shakes, banana ice cream, bananas for smoothies... !
