View Full Version : Are fruits fattening?

I have started making my way to being raw from yesterday. I have been making smoothies that consist of:
bananas, avocados, pineapple, strawberries and some orange and pineapple juices to compliment the mix.
I also add vegetables like:
broccoli, spinach and red pepper.

When drinking them I have a feeling that all that fruit is fattening. I have no logic to support it, hoping that someone can help me define it to be true or not.

Also what other smoothie mixes to people offer as a suggestion to a beginner rawer and uni student?

Cheers, S

I wouldn't say fattening, but I probably wouldn't be able to mix all that stuff together without being really, really bloated... kudos to you though if you have an iron stomach ;)

Wow! I agree with Tenuvial. Are these orange and pineapple juices you make yourself or are they from bottles/cans? Just curious.

I'm not sure what that "feel" is, but I'm thinking it's more of the conditioning folk have about "all that sugar" since they thing "sugar is sugar" and don't take into consideration that the sugar in fruit works synergistically with all other parts of the fruit .... well, are you gaining weight? Oh! You just started yesterday.

I'd suggest you wait and see 1) how you feel after drinking it 2) if you gain or lose or remain the same.

I feel fine after and I feel lighter and slimmer, so I think it is some kind of belief that has crept in there while growing up.

I want to assimilate more veggies than fruits because of the alkaline content but... it tastes crap lol.

It's definitely something that society drums into us for some reason. A lot of diets seem to advise steering clear of fruits for their high sugar content.

As Revvell said, it doesn't take into account that fact that different sugars are not the same and that eating fruit is taking in the fruit with the fibre, nutrients etc and has a different physiological effect than eating refined sugar.

To me, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting, and I've known countless numbers of people to lose weight on a high fruit diet (including myself). And I'm still to find someone who has lost weight on a conventional diet that restricts fruit.

You would really need to (especially for a male) to be eating humongous amoutns fo fruit and leading a very sedentary lifestyle to gain lots of weigth on fruit! If you ate a high fruit diet and still ate lots of fat and gained weight, it'd most likely be the fat than the fruit that would be the cause of weight gain (though I often eat high fruit and 'high fat', but still lost the weight).

p.s. have you tried green smoothies? You can add greens for added alkalinity (and minerals, and other great things).

The fructose scare has got so many people demonizing fruit. The truth is fructose is lower in calories than sucrose.

Fruit is low in both the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load.

Fruit is full of fiber and vitamins and minerals.

Fruit should be the foundation of every healthy diet.

I have been mixing spinach, broccoli and whatever else, with my fruits in a smoothy. So far all I have been doing is making smoothies and I like way the fruit takes away the taste of the veggies.

I am going shopping today and I want to consume more raw today (day 3) by getting more veggies. I only have supermarkets near by, not any fresh foods stores :(

My diet is practically all fruit and I eat the most fattening fruit that I can but have to work hard at it to keep my weight up. You can not get fat on fruit as your body knows how to deal with it.
I would drop the avocado from that mix because it is too much fat and it will slow down your digestion.

Sport, Will you give an idea of what you eat on a typical day?

How much greens do you consume?

Our favorite smoothie is
1 cup almond milk
1/2 banana
1/3 c blueberries
5 lg strawberries
1 1/2 tsp maca
2 tb hemp hearts
handful of spinach or kale
Drink slowly to mix with saliva/chew and that helps the digestion.

This is a staple at our house!

I try to eat a pound of greens per day and mostly suceed. I do that in a smoothie. I include 3 sticks of celery in my smoothie as I will be low on sodium otherwise.
Breakfast could be half a large watermelon or an entire honeydew or 1 or 2 canteloup.
Next is a smoothie made from 4 or 5 bananas. 3 sticks of celery a pound of greens and mango if I have a mango that is not great and do not want to eat, The mangoes are so good at the moment that it would be a shame to hide them in a smoothie. I add 10 grams of crushed flax and 5 grams of crushed sunflower or pumpkin seeds.
Next would probably be ice cream made from 4 or 5 frozen bananas, 150 grams each or raspberries and blueberries.
Next would be just mono fruit. mangoes or papayas or peaches.

Below is a typical day but I had no melons that day so started with the smoothie. I just checked and see that I only got 93% of my minerals that day and see that it was sodium I was low in because I had no celery. Maybe I had it and forgot to put it in as I normaly do. I had 32 grams of protein. I am happy with 30.

Thank you Sport.
So you had about 1 pound of greens, 2 pounds of bananas, and close to 4 pounds of other fruits, plus some seeds. That is a satisfying diet.

Yeah, I agree. Personally I like more veggies because of the alkaline content. I guess a lot of fruits are acidic.. would they cancel out the alkaline vegetables?

The only fruit that is listed as acidic is cranberries.

Cheers! Looks like I am on an alkaline track. Day 4 - I am on a full raw binge today, except for some drinks tonight (non-alcoholic).
