Ok, so I love Avocados and have eaten them even before I went raw. I recently joined a co-op and get Avocados through them. The problem is, every Avocado I get from them never ripens. I have tried various different environments for the Avocados (warmer area, cooler area) but no love. This never happens with the Avocados I used to get from Whole foods or other traditional store so I am not sure what the problem is.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure they're not getting soft at all? All it needs to be is soft near the stem for it to be ripe. Then you leave it in the fridge. The color doesn't matter much either.

You keep them on the counter, right? An unripe avocado won't do anything in the fridge. Have you tried putting them next to bananas?

I always put them in a drawer to ripen up. I used to put them in a paper bag then in the drawer, but then tried it without the bag and just in the drawer. Been doing it that way for decades!

I haven't tried a drawer. I will try that one.

I have had these things for literally weeks and at different times I will just try to open one to see and they are as hard as a baseball. :) Hopefully the drawer helps. Thanks!

If they really don't ripen, they might be cooked. I learned this from a friend, she told me they where treated with hot steam to keep bugs away(?)

When I buy organic avos, they always will ripen, and at other stores, I first buy one to test it.

Have you asked other members of the co-op about their experience with the avocados?

I was thinking the same thing. I would go back to the co-op and ask them to 'splain.

For the hardcore difficult cases of unripened avos, try putting them in a plastic bag with a ripe banana or ripe banana peel. This usually does the trick without 12-24 hours.

Hmmm.. cooked eh? I will certainly have to ask that question. Never even occured to me. Thanks!

And I put a few in a plastic bag to see.... :)

Not really cooked (in boiling water), but treated with hot steam.

Oh I found something about ripening avocados:

I also found this, but didn't read it yet:
