Hi everyone. Im not sure if this is the right place to post something like this, but I need some help.
Since I have become more aware of the relationships between income, food, and health I began to understand why people in my area are sick with diabetes, cancer, or just plain over weight. It is most likely that they are uneducated in food nutrition and that they can't afford much in the way of fruits and veggies.
I want to start a not for profit in my area. I have an uncle with 5 acres of land sitting unused. I was thinking that I can start a not for profit & cultivate the land, then I would be able to give produce to families who participate in a sustainable gardening course. The idea is to meet their immediate needs and show them to provide for the future in a manor that will not degrade the soil. I was also thinking of taking it a step further and asking the mayor to allow us to grow vegetable gardens in parks of low income neighborhoods. I can teach the local residents how to care for the garden and it can be a supplement to the neighborhoods groceries.
I'm thinking I can get volunteers from the environmental club and maybe some of the students who study botany. I also know of two professors who may be interested.
I'm not to sure on what is allowed (since we are talking about food) by the gov. I will be doing some research and try to get it moving soon. Is anyone here involved in something like this, or have any info that can help.....Thanks guys
