View Full Version : Tooth-extraction foods?

Hey everybody,
My df is having huge tooth issues lately, and has had three taken out already (something he is very depressed about). There is an appointment this Monday that will likely result in the loss of yet another tooth, and I want to help him deal with this, and prepare delicious, soft foods (without too much sugar :rolleyes:) that he can have following the procedure.

The past few times, they have been mashed potatoes and banana pudding, and this time I need your help to find a delicious raw recipe. I want my "help" to actually be beneficial to his health.
Two tough restrictions: He does not go for smoothies, and is sensitive to cold foods right now. :confused:

I would think you could make a tasty applesauce sort of thing - take some apples and peel them (so he doesn't get bits of peel down in the hole), toss them in the food processor with a date or two, or a few raisins, and maybe some cinnamon and/or nutmeg or whatever seasoning you like. Let it go until it's pretty smooth, and it should be pretty good. Might need to taste it and adjust the spices or more fruit if it's not sweet enough, or less if you don't want it sweet.

Two other possibilities are zucchini hummus and spinach dip. I don't know what you could do with them other than roll them up in lettuce leaves or something, unless you make raw breads, then perhaps a piece of bread with one or the other spread on it.

It was easy to come up with soft foods when I had my wisdom teeth out and was still on a SAD diet - harder to think of things now. :P

Smoothies, both green and otherwise would great! You can vary these in so many ways from fruits only, to fruits+greens w/a superfood, or with nut milks. Green smoothies in particular would be awesome - lots of vitamin C and minerals to help that extraction hole heal up faster. Add some papaya+bromelain(the latter from pineapple if you don't have fresh)to also help heal and reduce inflammation(the bromelain is specific for this.) Ideally having some fresh pineapple including cores(where the greatest concentration of natural bromelain is is best but in a pinch do the inexpensive enzymes from the health food store - you can empty a few capsules worth into the smoothie. If you do do the smoothies make sure they're blended very smooth so nothing gets hung up in that extraction hole, which will take some time to close. Warm salt water rinses are very helpful for helping heal up after oral procedures, even a deep cleaning where the gums have been worked over and feeling a little sore. The salt water combo helps tone those gums. My old dentist often recommended this and it did really help. Taking some extra vitamin C(powdered, so you can take therapeutic doses) couldn't hurt either, but of course the ideal form is in the food form most of the time. But a little supplemental for therapeutic use is fine post-procedure. Hope this helps!

You can make a *luscious* mango & banana 'pudding'. It's so easy. Just take 1-2 mangoes and blend in the food processor with a banana. You can do these fruits at room temperature. So good! I can't wait to do this for my youngest grandbaby soon as she's just starting to eat solid foods.

But - when he's no longer sensitive to cold foods - use 1-2 mangoes and then a frozen banana that you slice and process. Heaven!

I love this corn chowder recipe. I usually use frozen organic corn that I find at Costco.

Cheezy Corn Chowder

Serves 2-3

1 c corn kernels
1 clove garlic
1 T onion
1/4 c cashews
2 T nutritional yeast
4 baby carrots (or 1 regular one)
1/4" ring of red pepper
2 T olive oil
1/2 - 1 t psyllium (depending how thick you wish chowder to get)
1 t cumin
1/8 t nutmeg
1 T parsley
1/2 t salt
Ground pepper to taste
2 c water

Blend in hi speed blender till very creamy.

Add :
1/4 c more corn kernels
1 T parsley

Warm up on stove till warm enough to eat.

Bowl up and garnish with additional minced parsley & fresh ground pepper.

Snowdrop's Note: You can use fresh or frozen corn -I used frozen today because it is winter and there is no fresh corn available. I didn't use miso, but a light miso would easily replace the salt & add a deeper dimension of flavor.

Carmella's Note: I didn't change a thing to the recipe and it turned out fabulously!

Debb, he has liked the mango-banana ice cream before, so maybe I can convince him he wants that pudding instead of the cooked banana pudding loaded with whipped cream. Lol.

That corn chowder sounds delicious too. =] What is psyllium? Is it completely necessary?

Ahh - I've never used the psyllium husk - it's simply a thickener. What I do add is 2 teaspoons of chia to thicken. Do you have chia?

I've never made it without a thickener. Wow, it's a yummy recipe. I could eat it all the time! *Ü*

That was already my plan. ;) Love that stuff.

Hm. I don't have chia. I have ground flaxseed, as well as hemp seeds. Maybe I'll try a little trial batch without it.

Doesn't chia just gel up the same way flax does? I'm sure flax would work as a thickener - just start with a teaspoon and go from there?

I bet it would be fine without a thickener - it would still taste yummy, just may be thinnish.

I just thought of something.... what if you added more corn before blending, hmmm - that may thicken it up more too. *Ü*

Take him a few avocadoes (with a lemon to squeeze over with salt and pepper) and a nice watermelon. I just had a tooth extracted today, too :( That's what I'm stocking up on. Also, there's a really tasty carrot-ginger soup recipe in Raw Food, Real World. It's basically a couple of cups of carrot juice, an avo, some grated ginger, salt, and lime juice blended smooth in the vitamix. Really delish.

I know they've pretty much all been listed, but every time I have my braces tightened, I can't eat for several days (yes, I'm a middle aged woman with braces LOL)

So during those times, I expand my smoothie repertoire from just fruit/greens to almost like veggie soups. I throw in EVERYTHING, I'll even let it heat in the vitamix a bit so it's like a soup.

Additionally, I eat more soups, puddings, ice creams, etc.

there are alos a lot of raw pate recipes out there... I am sure they would work as well. :)

You can take any foods and either leave at room temperature or warm up a bit, so then you're not restricted on what to make. Fruit puddings usually taste good at room temperature and there are numerous varieties as many have mentioned. Hemp seeds work really well in puddings. You can also use butters.
