View Full Version : Sprouting Almonds—Trader Joe's and European Raw Almonds

I know Trader Joe's raw almonds are pasteurized, as they're the nonpareil version from California. I sprouted them early this week, and that little tail/nub at the sharper tip appears to have come out! Does that mean that, although they've been treated with heat, they're still somewhat alive?

I ask because I'd rather pay $5 a pound (I have a limited budget) for faux-raw almonds (I'm not zealous about the raw thing) than $12 a pound for the fancy raw Italian almonds I get from the co-op.

Any thoughts would be great!

The fact that they sprout doesn't mean they're raw. But since that doesn't matter to you, eat them. You can buy them cheaper than $12 online & in the U.S.

Isn't that basically a contradiction??

Sorry, not trying to be contrary, I just don't understand.

that sounds confusing to me too. i thought the ultimate test for life was to attempt to sprout to see if it sprouts?

I also disagree.

it may be that some of the periphery of the nut has been "killed" but that the kernel inside is still raw.

how much does sprouting "energize" the whole thing - including perhaps a damage outer portion????

thought to ponder.....unless someone knows of any research?

There's more to this, but keep in mind that if these nuts were truly raw the whole raw community would be eating and selling them. It's actually much more of a hassle and more expensive to have to get them from special places if they could just go to Trader Joe's or use the same supplier. I don't have the info convenient right now regarding this, but will be back if/when I do. Maybe you can ask Alissa meanwhile. I'm sure she as well would be using/selling them if they were truly raw. It sure would make all of our lives much easier. Let's hope the local farmers can reverse the pasteurizing law soon.
