Flax Seeds ground covert to Flax Seed Meal?

if a recipe calls for 1/2 cup flax seeds ground, does that mean 1/2 cup before grinding or after? If before, how much flax seed meal would I substitute?

If it says one cup flax ground, then I would think one cup whole seeds, and if it says one cup flax meal, its one cup of the already ground flax. Does that make sence? I think I worded that horribly:rolleyes:

I wondered the same thing. When I grind flax seeds the volume increases about 25-30%. I've tried several recipes both ways, measuring before and measuring after grinding, I didn't notice much difference in the outcome.

Same goes for soaking.
