I haven't added salt to my food in years with two exceptions, french fries and popcorn, neither of which I ate often. So, a few weeks ago I bought some good sea salt and now I find myself actually craving it at times, to the point of wanting to just put some in my hand and eat it straight. Any ideas what that's all about?

I'd think either you are slightly dehydrated, and/or need the minerals.

I'd think either you are slightly dehydrated, and/or need the minerals.

I drink 3 liters of water a day and weigh less than 100 lbs. so I don't think it's dehydration, so it's more likely to be the minerals. But how do I figure out which ones?

I allow myself to enjoy celtic sea salt. (within reason of course) Fortunately I have no blood pressure issues.

Also I was craving salt at lunch today so I had about 10 raw olives. That sure worked!

Eat fresh italian parsley. It has a nice "salty" taste.

Make sure the water you are drinking is NOT chlorinated, as that will leach minerals from your body.

As far as finding out which ones you need, I'm not sure, I just eat alot of veggies straight from the ground, and we have an artesian well in the mountains, and I know it has tons of minerals, as it leaves white chalk on everything.

My teeth and bones are massively strong though.

maybe a naturepath? and ask him to do a mineral check?

After years of ingesting commercial denatured salt, your body may simply be telling you a vitally important need it has - a need for good salt with all it's natural minerals. I would trust it and begin using superb natural salt on some dishes... see how it goes. Since this is coming from your body - I would expect your body will tell you when to cut down, or stop it again - if it ever does.
Best,

Well I've heard that once you are off the salt you stop craving it. I think it's an addiction. And sodium chloride aka table salt, sea salt, celtic salt etc. is inorganic. Organic sodium is obtained through a variety of plant food and it is mostly concentrated in celery and tomatoes. The plants convert inorganic minerals into organic fit for human consumption.

I read somewhere that celery can help with salt cravings. Don't quote me on this though.

For all your thoughts. I'll experiment a bit and see what I can figure out.

I think salt is an addiction like sugar and cooked food is. While I was eating cooked it was always with salt. When I went raw I decreased on salt but still craved it (craving cooked then BECAUSE of the salt). I cut out the salt and no desire came back until i slipped on cooked food and began craving salt again. Even on raw though I craved some salt even if it was celtic sea salt.

Salt craving may also sometimes be associated with zinc deficiency.
