If someone with hypothyroidism should avoid foods with goitrogens (which seems to include leafy greens according to the list pulled below from internet):

African cassava
Asparagus
babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit popular in Brazil and Africa )
Broccoli
brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
horseradish
kale
kohlrabi
leafy green vegetables (turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens)
Legumes (beans and peas)
peanuts
pine nuts
Processed meats
radishes
rutabaga
Spinach
Stawberries
Peaches
turnips
Watercress

And sweet fruit and/or fat (depending on different theories) if you also have candida, what's left for a rawie to eat???? Help!

If these lists are compilled by SAD eating doctors/nutritionists, then you really can't expect to follow those too closely. While there may be foods you should avoid or eat in moderation AT FIRST...an overall raw diet will be much better than any diet they would recommend.

There are quite a few rawies here who have or HAD hypothyroidism and did just fine eating many of the things on that list...same with candida sufferers!

Why are we supposed to avoid those foods?

I still have hypothyroidism, but my meds have been cut back 5 times. From the list I eat:

Strawberries (lots) - ate a quart today
Green leafy lettuce (quite a bit) - ate a whole head today
Spinach
Peaches
Pinenuts
Broccoli

I think as long as you're raw it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe just limit the amount of the foods from the list and see how it goes for you.

I agree with the fist poster (sorry, don't remember your name!), maybe limiting SOME of those foods at first, but since you're raw then it's a lot different. I have a similar situation (i think) that I was reacting to many foods (while cooked) and becoming allergic. I stared getting hives and anaphalatic with pineapples and strawberries. That was a HUGE shocker and dissappointment. Well, I went raw and got my top food allergens out of the way and I eat pineapple and strawberries galore with no problem! Raw can heal, so don't avoid foods just because SAD doctos suggest you should!

Eat in moderation at first if you feel you need to, but as long as you listen to your body and find yourself feeling fine, I think the raw food plan is best for myself and those with hypothyroidism.
I have eaten raw food for 2 1/2 months and I felt pretty good, but I was still feeling angry at making food for my family that was not raw and not eating from their circle of foods, I went back and suffered the old symptoms. Now I am back to do it again. I can do it, I know I do feel better on it, just made decision to not let it bother me about what my family eats. I am making them make their own food this time around. No more traditional mom does everything because she is mom. They can love me for other things, besides, they even said I am more lovable on raw! AS others here have said that have thyroid issues, they can eat strawberries, etc. just fine.

I too agree with the fact that those list are compiled by allopathetic (SAD) doctors. One of the reason they are suggested that they be avoided comes from the reactions discovered while eating them COOKED - however, I who have had thyroid cancer and radiation, have no problem when eating the things from the list that I like.

Broccoli
brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
kale
leafy green vegetables (turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens)
Legumes (beans and peas)
pine nuts
radishes
Spinach
Stawberries
Peaches
Watercress

To note that the list is provided by SAD doctors is the inclusion of processed meats - it is a good thing not to eat such. :)

thanks for all your input. actually i can live without most of the foods on that list except for the leafy greens - i need my kale and spinach!!! :) I think the foods with the highest goitrogens are broccoli, cauliflower, legumes and peanuts. Supposedly cooking them, reduces the goitogens by a third, but I can do without.
Besides seaweeds and coconut oil, does anyone have any suggestions of foods REALLY good for hypothyroidism? or other protocols like maybe epsom salt baths, liver flushes, etc?

Hi RawYogini,

Just as long as you're raw, I don't think that it matters which foods you eat. The people that I know that got off their thyroid meds or avoided ever going on them (Jaime, Igor Boutentko, etc.) did it with just raw foods. They never mentioned having a particular food. I know that Igor's children craved some raw foods and they later learned that the foods they craved helped with their diseases of dibetes and asthma. So I guess eat the raw foods that you crave.

I have thyroid disease and the raw foods I crave the most are cantaloupe and strawberries. I have no idea if they are better than other foods for the thyroid or not.

Here are some testimonies:

Rick – Thyroid Cancer

Jaime, who posts on a raw food board. She was on 180mg of Armour Thyroid. After one year of being 100% raw, she is totally off her meds. Plus she went from 300 pounds down to 140.

Rose Lee Calabro – Hypothyroidism – raw foods only

Igor Boutenko – Growth on thyroid – You will not read this on their website, but you will read about it in their books. Igor had a growth on his thyroid and the doctor told him he HAD to have surgery. With a 100% raw diet, his thyroid repaired itself

I'm soooo glad to read these posts. My family suffers from thyroid problems, and I feel that eating RAW is the best choice for me, now if I can only stick to it, and get my brain to stop telling me I just "have to have" that SAD food :o I am getting better at it (eating RAW) I'm not sure if I suffer from thyroid problems myself, but my intergrative Dr. is sending me to get a blood test to have it checked. I also am seeing this same Dr. for candida problems, which he will do a blood test for. I think I've read somewhere that if you clear up candida, most peoples thyroid functions improve  Maybe?? By the way, I REFUSE TO BELIEVE that ALL those good foods are bad for me (brocolli? strawberries? greens? NO WAY!) Just MHO!
