If this fruit weren't so hard to find, it could become a real addiction. Nature's Sherbert ice cream. Never had one until about three weeks ago. Some of you will recognize it instantly, others not so easily. Gotta love that wicked looking black seed (or two) in the middle.

A Mamey sapote!!!!
Somebody loves this as much as I do? That's Unpossible!!!
This is my favourite fruit of all time, alongside the lovely Rollinia.
But I like to eat mine in a savoury context, chop it up and sprinkle it over greens with some dressing as an avocado substitute.
Isn't it just so wonderful?!!
I'm so chuffed to find someone who loves it as much as I do!

I LOVE it too!! It's so amazing. If only it were more accessible and affordable around here.

My description when someone asks is that it tastes similar to a sweet potato except soft & sweet without cooking, only better. That's really the closest similarity, though it has its own unique flavor. Sapodilla also became my favorite when I realized how similar to Mamey it is. So now if someone has tried it, I can mention the comparison, which is way more accurate than sweet potato.
I love savory, but cannot imagine changing one bit of the mamey flavor since it's 100% perfect. Though I suppose if I had access to a huge amount consistently, I would experiment.
That's it! I need one....

What type of dressing do you use with this salad? Need to make sure I don't ruin the mamey if I try this. Anything else you make with it?

There are several breed of mamey in common use. Some are sweeter than others. I forget the name of the type I get but it's the longer ones show in the picture (there are also rounder ones, which in my experience are sweeter, ridiculously sweet, up to 60% sugar I believe).
I simply eat the mameys like an avocado substitute, dicing them up and putting them with tomato over a bed of greens and adding little cold pressed sesame oil and celtic salt, delicious! I just have it really simple as I don't want to overpower the mamey taste. I also eat them with a bit of salt straight out the the skin like a half avocado, gee I wish it was mamey season right now! :(
