Did I have a batch of bad sprouts? We bought some from the store and my dh was making a sandwich and said, boy these go bad quick.
I did not think they were bad, but then I smelled them and they had a funny smell to them.
How do you know when sprouts are bad and if they were would they make you feel sick?
Oh, and they were alfalfa sprouts.
Thanks!!
When they go 'brown' from oxidization
When they smell funny
When they taste funny
Generally, sprouts should be eaten after 3-5days since they germinated, but many stores pack them after, say, 2-3 days, and allow them to linger on their shelves for several days. This means they are not as nutritious as they should be, and that they have very little shelf life left in them by the time you buy them.
All of this is yet one more reason why you should try to sprout seeds for yourself, so that you have absolute control over the procedure, so that you know precisely how long it is since they germinated, and so that you can eat them at the absolute peak of their life force, and thus at their most nutritious.
Since manual sprouting is laborious (and a major reason why people choose to buy sprouts rather than grow them), you should seriously consider what an automatic sprouter has to offer. Here's a thread on exactly this topic:
