View Full Version : Washing salad..
has become my new pet hate. It used to be cleaning my juicer but this has now taken over plus its organic lettuce I buy and for the last while its just minging..covered in green fly and other flys. I hate killing them but theres no other way, even washing them off takes an age. You think you've washed a big plateful of greens and are just tucking in and notice...whats that? and you see its a green fly and another and another! Its been driving me barmy for ages so thanks for the opportunity to vent and any suggestions appreciated. I guess I'll have no b12 problems anyway provided I keep my eyes closed!

Swish in water with vinegar or a couple of drops of GSE, then spin. (I guess that'll work. I don't wash much of anything unless it's got obvious dirt ~ or critters).
thanks. I had never even heard of a salad spinner up until now! saying that, I've just watched a video of one on youtube and I don't think it will remove this amount of critters.Think I'll have to change lettuce supply.
also I won't start a new thread for this but can anyway recommend something chewey thats healthy and raw? I really need something to yomp on and don't have anything.I did use some groats a while back but does anyone know of any kind of snack that chewey?

Dates are chewy and anything you mix with them. Run dates or figs through a juicer with soaked almonds. If you don't have the type of juicer that will do that, use a food processor. Roll the "dough" in shredded coconut...

What about making some fruit leathers and rolling them up tight so that they stick together and then cutting them in to candy size bits.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm still not sure what I'm looking for though...maybe I mean crispy? has anyone tried these? http://www.bradsrawchips.com/

any lettuce or celery does the trick for me. A lot of times when my friends have chips, I bust out the lettuce or celery and try to crunch louder than they do! hahah.
"eat'm like chips, man". and the best part - no food prep, cleanup, or greasy hands :)

anything else you try to "crisp up" in your dehydrator (ie kale chips, flax cracker, sweet potato chips) would be dehydrating to you. But if there's a desire for it, definitely use that stuff for transition if you'd like :D It's way better than something like a lay's potatoe chip, triscuit, cheeze nip, or wheat thin.

Someone, not too long ago, recommended those to me. Haven't tried them yet but the recommender obviously liked them enough to suggest them to someone else! I'm thinking of purchasing some (as soon as budget and shelf space allows! :) )
