Hi! Newbie here. :)
I was just diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and was told to cut quite a few types of food out of my diet. I understand why I need to cut out certain ones like broccoli and cabbage. However, I am also supposed to cut out eating almonds and avocados.
Are those foods really going to harm me? A lot of raw soup recipes use avocado as a base. So, what am I supposed to eat?
Please advise,
Valora
I'm not trying to advise you, I can only relate my own story. I'm hypo (used to be hyper, had thyroid killed, sadly...) ~ but, I don't avoid any food. I never even heard of doing that to be honest.
I'm on compounded Armour Thyroid. I eat all of the foods you listed above with no apparent problems for myself. *Ü*

I am also on compounded Armour Thyroid. My doc doesn't use synthroid. Anyway, I asked him last time I was in the office about raw and my thyroid because I eat off that list of foods you aren't supposed to have every single day!!!! He said not to worry about it. He will just keep checking my levels.

I am actually quite familiar with the list of foods you "can" or "cannot eat." I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis disease. The problem with foods such as broccoli, cauiliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage, soybeans and soy products, peanuts, etc is that they are cruciferous and contain goitrogens. So basically overconsumption of these foods for people with a thyroid deficiency can potentially slow down thyroid function or create a potential for a goiter. So the trick is to not eliminate these foods but to use them in moderation.
But remember each one of us is different and you have to monitor how you feel after eating those types of foods. I know for me personally I have never been able to digest broccoli, peanuts, cauliflower, and a few other foods as well, so I personally choose to stay away from them.
As for the almonds and avocado, neither one of those contain goitrogens so is it possible that you have a food allergy or intolerance to them? I actually have an intolerance to almonds. I found that out through the elimination/provocation diet. Hope this ino helps;)

Thank you all for your feed back. It was very helpful. :)
@Barbellbeauty - No I am not allergic to almonds or avocados. The reason I was told to avoid them is because of their high fat/oil content. I have a slow metabolism (because of my low thyroid), so I am supposed to cut out as much fat from my diet as possible in order to help speed up my metabolism.

Really? I don't know how true that is. Look at coconut oil or anything coconut for that matter. It is high in fat.....saturated fat, in fact and it has been proven to speed up your metabolism and help promote heathy thyroid function. From my own personal experience anything coconut has really helped my thyroid. What other fats are you suppose to avoid? I can see eating them in moderation, but if you have no allergy to them and you don't go slamming down tons of avocados and almonds.....LOL but eat them sensibly you shouldn't have a problem with them. That's just my humble pie opinion:)

Lol! That's what I thought too! :D
I think I will just avoid the foods that could give me a goiter and eat the others in moderation.
Thanks again for the feed back! :)
Peace, Valora
