View Full Version : What is happening to me?

I know the title sounds scary, but I am really puzzled. I've been juicing with my new Hurom Slow Juicer this past week, which is the best juicer I've ever owned by the way, and I decided to juice some beets into my juice.

When I had an Omega 8000 Centrifugal juicer, I tried beets and they tasted totally nasty. I have never liked beets so I have not been using them in my juicing for years.

I read a thread somewhere on RFT about people's favorite juices and I kept seeing that a lot of people use beets in their juicing, so I thought I would give them another try. I went to the store and bought two beets, I figured I could at least use their leaves.

I juiced about an inch of beets first to see how I would like them before going on with the rest of my juicing and when I tasted the juice, it was delicious! It was really sweet and didn't have that dirt taste I've always tasted when I bit into a beet.

So what gives? Why do I now like beets? Is it because I've been going Raw for the last several days or what?

Has anyone else noticed that they now like/love a veggie they once hated after going Raw?

Just curious,
Dennis

yes!

ZUCCHINI That's a big one. My mom used to always bake them, and they'd get all mushy. I finally tried one raw when i went raw, and now I like them more than broccoli (which is my second favorite vegetable)

and BEETS. I used to hate beets, now i shred them and add the shredded beet to a lot of things like salads and nori rolls.

ORANGES. I've never Hated oranges, I have always loved orange juice, but I could never EAT an orange, peel it and eat the slices. I just detested oranges in this manner of eating them. NOW I love just grabbing an orange and eating it.

AND you are now using a quality juicer and that makes a huge difference in the juice. huge!

i am amazed at the difference between cantaloupe juice from my champion and from my greenstar. the greenstar is sooooooo above and beyond in quality and taste... it blows my mind!

I'll keep this in mind, because the reason I don't incorporate a lot of juicing into my diet is because I have a terrible, old juicer, and I feel like it wastes so much and produces a very small amount of sad juice.
Maybe I really need to upgrade and realize what I've been missing in life?

Dennis, what other juicers have you used/owned? Please explain how the Hurom Slow Juicer compares to these.

Could the beets that you juiced have been fresher than the beets that you had tried in the past? Just a thought.

Even though I am not 100% raw, my diet is a far cry from what it was even a year ago... and I can definitely say that my tastes have changed so much. Being able to appreciate all the subtle flavours in a simple fruit is so exciting, and so many people miss out on it.

There are still a few things that I'm waiting to try again.

My parents traumatized me with bananas and mushrooms when I was little.. hiding them in my food when they knew I didn't like them.

Oh yes!! Things I thought I'd never eat raw before are now positively delectable! I'm a pretty open minded eater, too, but there were a few things that I';d always turn up my nose at. I'm finding I crave more raw food now, too. Even though I'm not strict (I tend to listen to my body), I'm disappointed when I can't have something raw for a meal, because I hate the way something cooked will make me feel. This is HUGE step for me... :D

Our tastes become kind of desensitized from all the preservatives, salts, food colorings, and chemical additives in processed foods. Once those foods are left alone and the offending additives are flushed from your system for a couple weeks, you will notice your tastes changing and your buds waking up to new and better tastes of whole foods.
Once raw, go through those old foods that were not liked before raw. You may gain a new appreciation for them.

I think Aleesha and streetsurfer nailed it. There is NO Comparison between the taste of juice from my Hurom and my Omega Centrifugal.

The first juice I made with my new Hurom was carrot juice and I was shocked at how good my carrot juice tasted. It tasted better than ANY juice I've purchased at a juice bar. No comparison!

The juice from my Centrifugal always tasted thin, sugary and watery. The juice from the Hurom tastes thick, rich and amazing. I can't express this enough, like Aleesha says, it blew my mind.

If you're considering getting a new juicer, check out the Hurom, or Omega VRT, (they're the same except for the handle on the Hurom).

The Hurom (http://www.slowjuicer.com/) is far superior to any juicer I've had and I've owned the Omega 8000, Greenstar 1000 (http://www.greenstar.com/star1.asp) and a (Healthy Juicer (http://www.healthyjuicer.com/) -- $45 and I nice juicer for the price and to be honest, better than my Omega 8000).

The Greenstar was great, but clean up is much longer than the Hurom and the juice is comparable from the Hurom.

But... Aleesha is right, a good juicer makes a huge difference in flavor.

Personally, I think the Hurom is going to set the juicing world in a tizzy. The engineering of this juicer is much more refined than the level screw type juicer like the Omega 8004 or 8006 (http://www.omegajuicersdirect.com/pages/en/model_8004.php) or Greenstar models.

If I was in the juicer making industry, I would be worried about future sales.

The Hurom is way easier to clean than any juicer I've used and you can make different juices without having to take the machine apart and re-cleaning it. Check out the video on the Hurom (http://www.slowjuicer.com/) page to see what I mean.

I almost bought the Omega 8004, but at the last minute decided to get the Hurom and I am so glad I did. It can juice anything, from Wheatgrass, nut milks to tomato juice. It's spendy, but worth it... Excellent!

If you do get the Hurom, you will not be sorry.

I agree with streetsurfer. I don't own a fantastic juicer, just a juiceman and an old one at that, so can't comment on the difference in juicers. I do find that things taste - more - if you know what I mean. Lettuces are sweeter, raspberries are explosions of sweet perfumed bliss in my mouth. I also find that my family finds my recent raw creations too bland for them (when I can get them to taste them ), while I think they are loaded with flavor and quite tasty. I have ALWAYS disliked eggplant. I have been thinking for about a week now of trying it again. It would give me that meaty texture in veggie stews and chilis.

Many thanks for all of the juicer comparisons! Am noting the Hurom for later purchase.

Hey somelikeitraw, if I may suggest... before I bought my Hurom, I found a Healthy Juicer (http://www.healthyjuicer.com/), ($45 and I nice juicer for the price) at my local Goodwill.

I bought it and was really surprised how well it did on Wheatgrass and other veggies. If you're looking for an inexpensive holdover for doing greens before you buy a Hurom, check out this little juicer.

It's pretty well engineered and did a good job of juicing. Also, it will get more juice out your veggies than your Juiceman so it will save you money in the long run... Hope you don't mind me meddling? ;)

Anyway, just thought I would mention it...

Gittel, it makes GREAT almond milk. That was the first milk I've made with it. You can make any nut milk, almond, cashew, walnut, soybean, hazelnut even rice milk...etc...

I know this isn't raw, but I added some caramel flavored syrup to sweeten up my almond milk, you know the bottled syrups that Starbucks uses in their flavored coffee drinks. It was yummy. Also, if you want a completely pulp free milk you can strain it with a milk bag.

Here is a link to how to make almond milk with the Hurom:

Oh, and it can make coconut milk as well:

It also makes great Banana Ice Cream... I made some for my son and I and it was excellent!

For a video on how the Hurom works see the video in the middle of the Hurom (http://www.slowjuicer.com/) webpage. Also, do a search on YouTube for the Hurom Slow Juicer.. There are a ton of vids there...

Amazing...

Great info. Thanks, Dennis.

Did you purchase your Hurom from the website?

I apologize. I feel like I hijacked your thread by asking about the Hurom. As far as tastes changing, I believe this is possible. Be brave. Try new fruits and veggies, especially ones that you may not have cared for in the *cooked* world.

I actually bought from Here (http://www.ultimate-weight-products.com/page/UN/PROD/gear-juicers/H-HUROM). They're actually a local internet business, but they still shipped it to me. It only took about 2 days shipping.

Also, they offer a free book with each order, but if you want they will deduct the cost of the book from the cost of the juicer if you don't want the book.

And... if you're a returning customer, they give you a 5% discount on any future purchases.

I've been happy with their service.

As for hijacking the thread, like it was said in an earlier post, it was the juicer that helped make the change in my taste buds...

Thanks for the encouragement Gittel... and I also have to give myself a pat on the back... I turned down pizza for dinner tonight. I kept thinking about what others have posted on this board about our food decisions... and it worked. Pizza's a real biggie for me. :D

Take care,
Dennis

I googled the Hurom and found out all kinds of interesting stuff. I highly recommend googling it and watching different youtube videos about it as well.
