Hi, this post is for those who live in or near Portland Oregon... but you can read this as well even if it doesn't apply to you... :p

I've been Wheatgrassing for over a couple of weeks and I have been using Organic Spring Wheat Berries, but these berries are meant for making bread flour.

Does anyone live in or near Portland Oregon who knows of a place to get Wheatgrass berries grown primarily for making Wheatgrass juice?...at a reasonable price?

The berries I am using now cost me about $.50/lb and are pretty cheap. I would like to start using real WG berries but not if they're going to cost an arm or a leg. :D

Any ideas where I can buy them locally for a good price?

Note: I should mention that buying them mail order usually cost as much for shipping as the berries cost themselves, so mail order is out for me...

Thanks and happy Wheatgrassing, ;)
Dennis

Hi Dennis ~ I'm not in Portland, but rather 4 hours east. I do a lot of ordering every month through Azure Standard (http://www.azurestandard.com/). There is no shipping fee. I order my hard winter wheat berries through them - I've got some sprouting right now and will plant them up later today.

We don't have as much of a selection here as you all do by the big cities, so for me - Azure is a God send! I order about $150 worth of food and products monthly and wouldn't want to be without it. You can call their toll free number and request a catalog and sale flyer. They'll send you the first catalog for free.

I order so much from them, all organic... my flax (golden and brown), nuts, seeds, dates (their dates are SO delicious!), figs, wheat berries, spices, you get the idea... *Ü*

Thanks DebB, I'm aware of Azure but I don't think they sell WG Seeds that are meant for making Wheatgrass. I actually have an account number with them, but haven't ordered from them yet. I will in the near future.

Thanks for the feedback but I am really looking for WB seeds that are specialized for growing WG. The Spring/Fall wheat berries I've purchased and what Azure sells are really for making flour... which I used to make before venturing into Raw. :p

Take care,
Dennis

What makes a WG seed ment for making grass different from one that is ment for growing wheat?

What makes a WG seed ment for making grass different from one that is ment for growing wheat?

Selected WG seed has been tested and cleaned in order to have a healthy growing. Also, it supposed to grow taller than WG for bread making... The doctor is still out on this one for me... I'll know after my next batch grows.

All WG seed carries mold spores, but from what I understand, WG designated growing seed has been been tested, cleaned and is fresher than the seed you need to make flour.

Now, I have some WG seed that I received from Sproutman that comes with his WG growing system and I still have some mold growing... but with Sproutman's system (http://sproutman.com/wheatgrass-products/sproutmans-soil-or-soil-free-wheatgrass-grower) it's easy to wash the mold away before it gets out of hand.

I really like his system and will be buying more. They're a little spendy but if you tried to put together a system like his, it would end up costing you more than just outright buying Steve's system.

Now, I have a batch of regular Bread Red Spring Wheat growing also so we'll see how it goes.

Also, I found out that the WG I was using before was actually Rye seed I had, which I thought was Wheat. I wondered why it didn't grow very high.

Anyway, whether there REALLY that much of a difference between Bread v.s. designated WG seed, I'll test out since I have both now.

Hope this answers your question... and for those who are interested in a nice WG growing kit, check out Sproutman's® Soil or Soil-Free Wheatgrass Grower. (http://sproutman.com/wheatgrass-products/sproutmans-soil-or-soil-free-wheatgrass-grower)

Take care,
Dennis

I ordered seeds the other day from Wheatgrasskits.com. This is my first time ordering seeds and once grown will be my first time doing anything with wheatgrass. Very excited.

Hi- I'm very curious about the same issue that you wrote about. I live in Portland Oregon and can not find any good berries. What did you end up doing, if you don't mind sharing and also, how are the trays from sproutman working out? I wanted to grow them in soil, but not in this weather :), so I considered buying the $100 wheatgrass system. How is your mold issue? That's what I'm worried about, and how much light are you giving your grass?

I really hope you'll read this post and reply :)

I simply love the Sproutman's Wheatgrass Sprouting Trays (http://sproutman.com/wheatgrass-products/sproutmans-soil-or-soil-free-wheatgrass-grower?cPath=11&zenid=a1a86da0aed1834a20259495234fdd65), they are very well thought out. An excellent system... If you can afford them, get um!!! ;)

As for where I buy my Spring Red Wheat berries, I live in Newberg Oregon and buy from WinCo. They're actually pretty inexpensive. I really do not see any difference between Organic online seeds V.S. the ones I buy from Winco. They both produce great WG.

The key to getting good WG without the mold is to make sure you clean your tray with bleach after harvesting. This kills the mold spores and I've had great results after starting this cleaning regime.

I also bought some indoor florescence lights and placed them on a timer. I have them turn on and off when I want them to... These help with growing WG indoors. They're also pretty cheap.

Also, be sure to water/mist twice a day and use a sprayer like this one found at Amazon or you'll wear your hands out... :D Note: I bought mine at BiMart.

1 Liter Pump Plant Spray Bottle (http://www.amazon.com/Solo-1-Liter-One-Hand-Pressure-418/dp/B000BX4VXI/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1288726153&sr=8-2-fkmr0)

I also bought some concentrated Kelp fertilizer off eBay and once each Wheat Grass life cycle spray my WG with this fertilizer. It makes for a sweeter WG...

... and again I cannot over emphasize too much how great the Sproutman Wheatgrass System (http://sproutman.com/wheatgrass-products/sproutmans-soil-or-soil-free-wheatgrass-grower?cPath=11&zenid=a1a86da0aed1834a20259495234fdd65) is... Excellent!

---------- Adding some growing Tips for using the SproutMan system ------------

Wash your berries with water before you sprout...
Soak your berries 6-8 hours in water in a Mason Quart Jar... Drain, then rinse.

After draining, let berries sprout in the jar with a lid and keep in the dark for about 2 days.

Rinse twice a day... once in the morning and once in the evening.

After two days the sprouts should have about a 1/4 or more of rooting.

Pour out on the Sproutman soiless tray and spread out evenly.
cover with a black and water twice a day

After sprout roots push the black top up, replace with the clear green house tray.

... You'll figure the rest out... and be sure to water/spray twice a day
Use a mild organic fertilizer once a grow cycle. Helps the grass a lot.

When ready to harvest, harvest all at once and store in a zip lock bag with a couple of paper towels in the bottom of the bag to absorb moisture.

Store in the Fridge and use as needed.

Clean the tray with bleach, rinse well and start the process all over again.

Anyway I hope this helps...

Thank you for responding = ). I am currently on a search for the hard red winter berries (ann wigmore) recommended those. Who knows what's better, but I'll see if I can find a local source. I'll let you know if I do = ). As far as the systems, I looked into that one. My only hesitation is whether growing in soil produces more nutrients? I looked at the way Dr. Brian Clements grows his wheatgrass at the Hippocrates institute, and many others on youtube, and they put a lot of nutrients in the soil. I don't know if it would work the same with the soil- free system. Thank you once again for responding, if nothing else, I will try this method. :)

Living in Washington state well I so want to grow my own wheatgrass and I have once, but the sun won't shine good enough for a good batch of wheatgrass any opinion on this.and how did you say you keep the mold away?

Dianne, from what I've seen, you really don't need too much sunlight to grow WG... Just place your grass close to a window so it can get at least some indirect light. This should be enough light to grow...

Or... Go to you local BiMart and buy a cheap $10 shoplight fixture and a couple of bulbs then hang them above your grass.

Or... buy a growlight bulb that you can screw into a regular light fixture

NOTE: I grow soiless as mentioned earlier, but but I found that one of the most important elements of my successful grass growing is the Organic Seaweed/Kelp Fertilizer that I buy off eBay. It comes in power form and is highly concentrated. A 4oz package of dry OSF will make 10 gallons of liquid fertilizer. It will last you a longgggg time and makes a definite difference in the overall flavor of my WG... i.e. Much sweeter and smoother flavored grass.

You just spray it on the grass as it grows and it makes a wonderful sweet WG juice. Even my son and his friends are shocked at how sweet my WG is.

Good luck
Dennis
