Howdy from the beautiful Commonwealth of Kentucky y'all!

By way of introduction, I'm a 49yo stay-at-home mom/writer and I have two terrific adopted special needs boys.

I'm going through another metamorphosis in life and was happy to find this community.

I guess you could say that I'm a walking contradiction.

On the one hand, I've pretty much always had what most would consider a healthy diet (90% vegetarian, juiced a lot, whole grains, organic produce, etc., etc., etc.). I've always been a water junkie. I work out at the gym 3 days a week and am what you could call a moderate boby builder (though I wouldn't mind whipping myself into shape to compete someday in the Master Figure category).

On the other hand, I've been a smoker for 30+ years and consume waaaaay too much beer.

Nearing the half-century mark ( again), I'm beginning to feel the aches and pains and results of my darker side. Joint pain (arthritis), ovarian cyst, too-many-to-count fibroid tumors hither and yon, dry scaley skin, chronic bronchitis, shortness of breath... you get the idea.

I wasn't drawn to the raw diet because I need to lose weight. I was drawn to the raw diet because I'm not at optimal health and somewhere deep inside of me a voice has been saying—okay, shouting, "eat raw you idiot!". (Trust me, it also says, "Pitch the freaking cigarettes and beer too you moron!".)

So, alas, my worn, torn, and aching self stumbled upon this site.

I've never eaten raw before, except for the "usual," and am fairly clueless about how to go about it. For example, I hit the health food store yesterday and bought ooooooooodles of yummy stuff but I'm a) not quite sure how to plan my meals so that they all aren't always just salads and, 2) bought way more than I'll ever eat before it goes bad. ... sigh

I've already nixed the brewskies from my consumption répertoire. I started a parasite cleanse this morning and at the end of that I'm going to do the recommended liver cleanse. After that, the dreaded "smoking cleanse."

Anyway, that's the nuts and bolts of me. Lurked a bunch, enjoyed what I saw, registered.

So hello! :)

Welcome.

I too am an ex-drinker and smoker. You are on the right path with just that. Those are two draining activities for the body.

Glad to have you here.

Hi LeafLicker!

You are doing a great thing for yourself giving up the things you can. I am a big believer in self talk and what you say to yourself making a difference. I encourage you to start referring to yourself as something more positive than the two things you called yourself above. You are truly magnificent and appreciating yourself will take you far.

If you can, you may want to invest in Alissa's book Living on Live Foods. It may seem pricey but it is well worth every penny and is a great guide. There is a thread on this forum, here (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=54209), where a lady is making every recipe from that book and posting her experiences. Very helpful!

More power to you!

Thanks, all, for your warm welcome!

And I totally agree with you somelikeitraw. I'm actually a pretty positive person with a rather twisted sense of humor. So no worries, I don't truly consider myself either of those things, however it is kinda fun to hug my inner dork from time-to-time.

Thanks for your kind words!
