Just bought an e-book with recipes for raw krackers and kookies and one of the recipes has butter extract (which isn't an extract at all!) as one of the ingredients.

This just frosts my cookies! I mean, here this is supposed to be a raw food book and it's having me use WATER, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, AND FD&C YELLOW 5 in my otherwise healthy and good for me treat.

Other raw food books I have purchased in the past have had non-raw ingredients too, like maple syrup and another couple of ingredients which escape me just now. I finally learned to thumb through any raw food book I am planning on buying to see if it's ingredients are on my same wavelength. This was an e-book though, so that wasn't an option.

Now, I completely understand about some people wanting to use agave and nutritional yeast and such, those are easily replaced or left out. But PROPYLENE GLYCOL, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, AND FD&C YELLOW 5?!?

Please accept my apologies for being so negative here but this really gets my goat! If a person just trusted the author they would be putting some seriously nasty stuff in their bodies.

Ok, I'm done :::steps off of soapbox:::

I would think you could omit the butter extract, or maybe toss a little bit of coconut oil in instead. I'm wanting to order all 3 of her books - does she use other ack ingredients?? Was this just in one recipe, or more? *Ü*

Thank you!

I only saw the two books, not sure if we are thinking of the same person. A quick look revealed only the one Ack! ingredient. Hopefully there aren't any more. I figured I would just leave out that ingredient but I am guessing it is the main reason that particular recipe has the word WOW in it's title. I was some intrigued by the thought of possibly lifting a butter flavored healthy treat to my lips and went searching online to find out what I could. Glad I did. The most helpful thing I learned from these books was that if you want something crunchy - add flax! Either ground, whole soaked seeds or both.

Hi somelikeitraw ~ I thought you may be talking about the Krazy Kracker Lady's books? Abeba.. If so, I watched a video and she has a third book, "Lip Smackin' Favorites", but it's not listed on her site.

I emailed her to hopefully get more info about it as I'd like to buy all 3.

I'm so surprised she'd use that butter extract. Sheesh! That's NOT what I'd expect when ordering a raw food book at all. *Ü*

Yep DebB, I didn't expect it either. That's the author, didn't know about her 3rd book. I'd say she has some good recipes. I just got thrown for a loop with that one nasty ingredient.

I can totally understand your frustration. When I first started eating and learning about raw foods I was depending on the raw food books I read to provide me with recipes that I could use. Unless listed as such, I would assume that everything in the ingredient list of a recipe was raw. I learned later that I had been fooled on some occasions.

I think that it is VERY important for raw food books to NOT include raw ingredients or to list beside them in brackets that they are not raw! I say this because when I was first learning about the foods I ate I was surprised at how many ingredients I bought from the store that I thought were whole raw foods had already been exposed to high heats during their packaging process or preparation process. Maple syrup seems to be a popular one as you mentioned. I have also found different types of (nonraw) soy sauces in recipes, among other non raw ingredients.
