I did a quick search and didn't find anything to answer my question. I just cracked open a coconut. It was sold with the dark brown ones but it was lighter in colour and pointed at one end. I didn't notice the three 'spots' on the nut either. It's the same size as the dark brown coconuts.

So I poked a hole in it with a screwdriver and poured out the water. The last time I did a coconut the water was divine, but this time it smells kind of funky. The best thing I can describe the smell as is 'lysol'. The meat smells 'soapy' as well. There's no brown or pink meat, it's all white and the water is mostly clear.

I'm not even going to try to eat this, I'm just tossing it. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Take it back to the store, when coconut smells or tastes, "soapy" it is old.

They should replace it for you.

Well that sucks, I read that lighter-coloured coconuts were younger. It's already trashed but I'll remember that for next time, thanks!
