View Full Version : Living proof of the protein myth!

I have always had trouble with low blood protein levels, most likely because of celiac disease having caused damage to my intestines causing absorption problems. When I started donating plasma, they required a blood protein level above 6 and I was always just above that. But when I went raw, my protein levels usually dipped below 6 and I was unable to donate, and there went my "spending money." I was told by the nurse that rarely can vegans donate plasma because they just can't sustain those protein levels. I took a break from donating and did a bunch of green smoothie fasts and concentrated on eating raw and getting well. After a few months, my intestinal health improved quite a bit and I went back and tried again. I was back in the low 6 range, so I always made sure to drink some almond milk or have some hemp seeds the morning I donated. Well, I had surgery 7 weeks ago so could not donate for awhile. Just today, I decided on the spur of the moment (because of some financial issues) to go in and see if I could be cleared to go back to donating. Not only was I cleared, but they fit me in right away, which I wasn't expecting. I have been doing a green smoothie fast since Monday so very few nuts or anything else, just fruit and greens. Well, lo and behold, my protein was 7.3! That is the highest it has ever been, SAD or raw! And that was with no almond milk or hemp or any type of nuts that day to give me a boost! Yay raw! It truly does heal from the inside out and give you the highest quality protein.

Wow - that's something. If you don't mind me asking - how much can one receive from blood donation?

Katch,
You've piqued my interest, so I looked at some labs that were done on me
On Mar 15th . My protein, total, serum - was 6.8 The avg says it's 6.0 - 8.5.
I had some other issues that were not so good, so began a cleanse one week later. This will be interesting to check to see my progress and I will be sure to post my protein levels here too.
Before the test, I ate a lot of fat, mostly raw, some of it from raw butter and milk, too many nuts, avocados, and some meat......but tests revealed too much. I am doing no overt fats or proteins now that I'm cleansing - except for some cheating here and tthere ---literally a couple licks of things. I am doing some savory/non-sweet smoothies/soups, but mostly juice and I have lost 13 lbs, with about 13 to go. .
So this will be interesting for me too.
Thanks again for sharing and I'll post my results here too.

Wow, Katch. Yes, it will be interesting to see how your protein continues to trend, assuming you continue with regular plasma donating.
It is so rare that we get to hear actual bodily measurements like this, especially regarding the protein issue, that are suggestive of the healthiness of this way of eating. Very encouraging!

I get a bit mind boggled by people and the protien thing. I mean I've never seen a horse eat a steak.

If you are fence sitting you might want to listen to a video by Dave the Raw Food Trucker who lost over 200 pounds on raw.

Basenjimamma, Why not get your protein levels checked? Then you can tell them yours - not Katch's? !!!

that's great! I get enough hassle from my mum about getting enough protein on a vegetarian diet, I dread to think how she'll react when I tell her I'm starting a raw food diet! it's good to hear some reassurance!

I get a bit mind boggled by people and the protien thing. I mean I've never seen a horse eat a steak.
And you've probably also never seen a human eat the quantity of greens and other stuff a horse eats.
The point is, you need to be careful about the rationalizations we make. We aren't horses. We're omnivores.

yeah I know. It's just that I get a bit frustrated when people tell me I can't be healthy with out meat. It's something I started saying to get my meat eating friends to shut up. which I don't know why I even care really. I mean I know that I am healthy. So who cares what they say about it.:D
