I'm excited about the raw food diet and eating organic food. The main thing that sucks though is that I find that all the organic stuff at the store is slimey or overpriced in a box. Is the pesticide residue in lettuce or celery really going to harm me?

Of course it will but not as much as killing all the nutrients by cooking your food; or eating all the processed food people are "trying" to tell you is good for you. You know, you've got to do what you've got to do. Rather fresh conventional than slimy organic.

what about local farmers markets and csas or co-ops? might be a better solution.
also - maybe post up here where exactly you are located - perhaps someone on this board can offer you some better shopping options.
and try to talk to your produce person - let them know you would buy the organic produce if it was a better option.

its weird we have to pay more to have them not put stuff on our food! how does that make sense?? you'd think we'd pay more for conventional produce with all the extra crap on it :p
buy conventional and find a good veggie wash. there are some recipes to make your own around the internet, but you can also buy it in stores
It has always perplexed me how the right choices of buying organics and seeking alternatives for a healthy life style costs so much. It seems like it would be reversed.
I can understand your frustration about the organics. It can be a challenge to in find good quality produce that is organic, fresh, and affordable. There are some good produce washes out there that are suppose to be effective in removing a good amount of the pesticides. I use this when I have no alternative.

thanks for all the responses!
we do have a farmer's market comming in may so i'll check that out.
i never thought to talk to the produce person. i just figured everything got slimey because no one buys the organic stuff! :(
i live in williams lake, bc, canada so we're pretty small. i have a few different produce stores that i go to. they all carry different things so i switch off every week or so.
i've looked into veggie wash. i read somewhere that the wash itself leaves residue and i read somewhere else just to use water..but does water alone really get rid of the crap on there?
hope everyone has a great day:)

This is a chart listing the normal levels of residues in fruit and veg.
Try and buy the ones with the high scores organic and you can be less careful with the ones with the low scores,
