View Full Version : Green Smoothie Question

I am new to these boards and new to the idea of Raw Food eating. I am still eating a SAD diet, but am introducing my palate to more vegetarian and raw recipes.
I have read Victoria Boutenkos' book "Green for Life" and all the green smoothie recipes call for two cups of water. Is it ok to substitute one of those cups of water with a cup of some type of fruit juice. I tried it that way and found that it was more palatable to my family's taste buds.

Do whatever you want. It's your food; you're an adult (I'm assuming).. play with it. In my book I tell people to use fruit juice, coconut water, veggie juice, and/or seed/nut mylk. Whatever makes you happy.
I've never tried fruit juice (don't know why I haven't tried it yet...) but I *love* the water from a young Thai coconut! My smoothie just doesn't taste right without it. I'm able to get a case (9-12) at a local Asian market for just over $11. *Ü*

If it's fresh juice. Otherwise it defeats the raw purpose. There are many ways to make a smoothie more tasty. Try adding much more fruit and less water, using flavorful fruits such as bananas, finding the right combos, adding coconut oil, using dates, etc.

Do what you need to do to get yourself in the habit - your tastes will naturally change.
Long before I was raw I did an oj-banana-frozen strawberry smoothie. When I started to make green smoothies, I just added the greens to that. In no time I didn't want the juice in there anymore - I had lost the taste for it and just wanted the greens.....keep up the good work and welcome to raw!:)

I have tried apricot nectar and some other fruits, but I prefer coconut water. I'm trying not to put sweet fruits in with greens anymore. I find I have less digestive issues if I don't mix the two.;)

I like freezing coconut water and using that for ice in the smoothies that way you don't need fruit to sweeten the smoothie.
