I have a question about when I should work out.

I'm starting to follow a guideline for when i should eat certain foods. Protein is to be eaten later on in the day. What if I work out in the morning? Is it a big deal if I don't have a protein dense meal after? I also don't have enough for a good juicer so I can't condense my protein that way if that would even work.

Tips?

I listened to an interview with a raw athlete and he said that you digestion is at it's most receptive after exercise (and I assume first thing in the morning) so you should take your most nutritious food then. He suggested that you have a green smoothie or green juice.
I think that the interview may have been with Brendan Brazier.

cool. the only concern i would have with that is that i like to workout before i eat anything and i want to incorporate fruit into my diet. i'm looking into hemp protein powder or just ground hemp in my fruit smoothie after a workout. what do you think, sport (or anyone else who'd like to help me out)?

I know that my name is Sport but it is false advertising. I am not a sport lover and do not work out half enough so can not give you the benefit of my experience.

I work out first thing in the morning & have a smoothie after with fruit & protein powder (raw). I'm trying to get more protein throughout the day with greens

hey katie,

that sounds about right. normally, i wouldn't have the fruit with the protein but it's pretty well the only way i can see someone getting their quick carbohydrate source and protein at the same time. i was going to try just having the hemp protein with unsweetened almond milk, but then the only carbs you're getting pretty are from fiber, which runs right through you and i don't imagine it really giving you much energy. maybe i'm wrong.

thanks for the input everyone:)

What about raw sprouted quinoa? I'm thinking a good after workout building food would be a nut butter, rolled in hempseeds and sprouted quinoa seeds. Maybe a little dates as sweetener in the nut butter?

This should give you plenty of protein as well as carbs.

Hi there, I like to run in the afternoon, I find I have far more energy then (but thats just me) although sometimes I have to run in the early morning due to work. I have a banana 30mins before I start, then once I get back I have another one, then a green smoothie, with hemp powder, maca root, and some chia seeds(brilliant stuff). Sometimes I drink coconut milk if I have a extra hard workout and feel like I need that extra something, it helps replace all the goodies thats you lose as you sweat. Hope that helps abit!

I'm new to the raw diet and this is a great question. I workout with weights. I don't just do this to stay fit, I do this to stay fit AND build muscles. Therefore greater ingestion of protein (say, than the normal raw food eater) is vital to my goals as a bodybuilder.

If there are any other bodybuilders in this community with likewise goals, I would really appreciate some guidance.

I hesitate to start a new thread on the subject so hope my little voice is heard here too. :-P

This is not a hijack, Maria, I really do appreciate your question as well as the responses.

All the best!

Hey Maria you can totally benefit from making some sort of smoothie or shake post workout. Hemp protein powder would be just fine. I have been making a shake with fruit and hemp and greens and it is great!! I juice the fruit and greens and then put it in the blender with the hemp and a bit of water to mix it up. I am also thinking about ordering Sun Warrior powder. I've heard lots of good stuff about it. I train pretty hard doing weights and cardio and I am also a trainer and nutritionist. When I used to eat a typical bodybuilding diet(so glad to not do that anymore:D) I would injest a whey shake and some sort of carb post workout. Post workout regardless should always consist of protein and carbs. Fruit is great because it fills up your muscle glycogen that gets taxed during a workout. Fat is typically not a good option post workout because it actually slows down digestion and absorbtion. So if you are drinking a shake or even some juice it will be utilized by the body quicker with out the fat. The fat will only slow everything down. So use the almond milk pre workout or later in the day to get the maximum benefits:)

ok i sense a lot of misinformation here.

your body needs protein 24/7. and it takes about a week for the muscle to recover after workout. you should have protein every 2 - 3 hours for about a week starting from the time of your workout :)

having protein once a day is nonsense :)

also it is a myth that your muscle needs protein immediately after workout. that would suggest that your muscle recovers in minutes to hours. in fact your muscle recovers in days to weeks.

Well, eating protein all day long is easy on a raw vegan food program since EVERY raw food contains amino acids which easily create assimilable protein. Done! :)

I say just listen to your body. When it wants more protein, say from greens or something, give to your body. If it doesn't want it, don't worry about it. I added protein to my diet through a raw powder & it screwed me up for a while. Now, when I'm feelin' like I wanna see results with a workout I'm not concerning myself with "more" protein.

I believe Brendan Brazier says to eat a fruit directly after working out and then a recovery meal an hour after. I don't always follow that and it's fine though.

Well, First, a little explanation. Bodies like to be in a state known as homeostasis: nothing changes, everything proceeds nicely, no surprises, keep on keepin’ on. Bodies only adapt if they have to, because they’re thrifty and they don’t like to waste energy.
