Hello all! It's fiddlehead season here in Maine, in years past I've always cooked them, I've been told they have toxins in them that need to be cooked out...
I am wondering if anyone knows if they can be eaten raw?? When I google it I find conflicting answers, was hoping maybe someone here would know!
~Thanks

Dont know for sure..my understanding is they must be cooked. Accord to raw world, that seems crazy that cooked is less toxic than raw...hahaha
In the herb world, some things can only be eaten cooked as it removes toxic elements.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
Tried this shortly after becoming raw - (overenthusiam dominated)
I got VIOLENTLY ill.
I know Leah makes them at Grezzo - she must pickle or do something to make them not poisonous and so yummy.

Rawviveyourself. Thanks. I tried a whole bunch of elderberries raw once, after researching it --said to cook them, but couldn't find anything that said they would make you sick raw. Found info on making you sick in one obscure place or two AFTER I got ill.
Good to know.

I remember the days of my father foraging in the woods for fiddleheads every year. He loves them! But, always cooked them. I have heard they can make you ill if you eat them raw?

Oh NO!!! I guess I won't try them raw!! Thanks everyone for their info, I wonder if just "heating" them to the 118 degree mark in water would take out the toxins... hmmmm... anyone have any experience doing that with other "toxic" foods ??
