View Full Version : Too Much Fruit Salad

The internet in general is of no assistence...

I'm 90% raw and my boyfriend is... Well he likes his junk food.

He told me "I ought to start eating healthier," and we discussed potentially having a fruit salad together.

So this weekend I brought the melons (cantaloupe/honewdew) and the strawberries and the kiwis and we made a big (5 cups) fruit salad and ate about 3/4 of it together while watching TV last night.

About halfway through the night his stomach started to feel awful. Digestive cramping and gas and whatnot.

So he wants to know, "if it's so good for me, why does it make me feel like crap?"

I told him it's just because his stomach isn't used to the fiber... But is there a better (more scientific) explanation than that? We'd love to know.

Thanks.

Well, for one, melons do not mix with other fruit, because they digest so quickly...If mixed, apparently, they just sit there and ferment which will make you bloat, have other issues including gas.

Also, things that you eat stays in your body for longer then just until next meal, so he has to keep in mind things he ate up up 36 hours earlier....

Our bodies develop a preference for the foods to which they become accustomed. This is merciful, when you think about it, since through most of history people had to eat what was available. Whenever we eat something we don't often eat, digesting it can be hard on the system. You could challenge him to eat more fruit and veggies for a couple of months, and then see how he is feeling. :)

Here is another theory.

Our digestive system tries to protects itself from bad foods by lining itself with mucus. Fruit is very cleansing. When your boyfriend eats it, the fruit begins to stir up the mucus lining the gut, causing stomach pains. Think of it like wading in a muddy lake. The water is clear, until you step in and start stirring things up.

Pain from eating fruit(s) is a good indication his digestive system is already compromised. Fruit and veggies are the cure, not the problem.

Good advice...also....what did he eat all day before the fruit??? The fruit ferments in the belly if it is sitting on top of food that takes longer to digest.
