Hi folks. :)

Here's a challenge for you, help me eat better.

I have a Champion juicer and a Vita Mix.

I have can drink blended drinks if I blend them into a smoothie.

Tomatoes, mushrooms are evil.

Greens make me ill. One small leaf of Kale in my drinks will make me sick.

I have an odd fobia when it comes to all of these garden items. it's something I've stuggled with for my entire life (39 years old).

I'm not overweight and ride a mountain bike for exercise. I need to eat better though... :)

I'm don't see myself being able to go full raw anytime soon. But I would like to work towards that goal.

Current diet is made up of Rice, Black Beans, Cheese, tortillas, onions, jalapenos peppers, potatoes, yams, aspairagus and the occasional cabbage.

Blended drinks are made up of Bananna, blueberry, pineapple, apple, celary and the occasional nut.

What say you?

:)

Guacamole~!
One-serving easy recipe:
1 avocado mashed, 1 roma tomato chopped, a dash of sea salt, squeeze of fresh lemon juice, and a handful of cilantro (seems like you would like to add a bit of jalapeno, too ;)) mixed together in a bowl
Try it on celery or cabbage, and maybe gradually make your way towards a friendly green as your body allows. Guac&Romaine is one of my favorite meals. :)

If you can, try to drop the cheese. (I know, it can be very addicting!) You can try some of the vegan cheeses on the market (though not raw), or try making a raw cheese. Here are some pretty basic recipes I found...

here's another recipe that seems to be in line with where you are at - just came in my inbox from raw vegan radio:

Steve's Wild Raw Food Recipe of the Day

Out-of-this-World Raw Chili

1 Cup Sprouted Organic Garbanzo Beans
1 Cup Sprouted Organic Lentil Beans
1 Cup Sprouted Organic Mung Beans
1 Cup Sprouted Organic Adzuki Beans
2 Organic Carrots, Grated
1 Stalk Finely Chopped Celery Stick
1 Finely Chopped Zuchini
1/4 Cup Organic Cold-Pressed Flax Oil
1/4 Cup Lemon Juice
2 teaspoons Non-Irradiated Chili Powder
1 teaspoon Celtic or Himalayan Sea Salt
Dash of Non-Irradiated Cayenne Pepper

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Let marinate for 1 hour in the refrigerator before serving. Delicious!

Guacamole won't happen. ever. :D those green things are gross to me...

Where does one get chickpeas that aren't cooked? I love hummus but I use canned beans.

I'm going to pick up some Jicama soon. Probably won't do them raw just yet though. Can I cook them like potatoes? in fry form :)

Thanks for the suggestions.

sorry - raw hummus is made from zucchini - if you google search the recipe you will see the process....or if you really wanted to use chickpeas, then you buy them dry and sprout them and use them as you would canned. it is super easy. have you purchased alissa's book yet? it is probably the best start you can get as far as ideas, sprouting, etc.

for jicama....i never considered cooking this - even before i was raw! that would be like cooking a radish to me - strange. if you look up the recipes, you will see that raw jicama can be made into delicious fries.

i agree with what is said often on this group - just eat raw and the shifts will happen and your body will naturally be drawn to eating differently.

an open heart is one of the best kitchen gadgets you can have...:)

the problem with me just eating raw is I would starve. I really can't eat most fruit/veggies. It's a mental issue that I've had since birth. I'm trying and learning but my brain is my #1 enemy right now, in that regard.

You might also try "Emotional Freedom Training" or EFT, I have the book/DVD for this but haven't read or watched yet. It could very well be of benefit to you.

Use them in a chocolate mousse. Can't even taste them. There are recipes on this site most likely or, google.

Where does one get chickpeas that aren't cooked? Any supermarket will carry them.

Why would you come to a raw site and ask if you can fry a veggie? You can anything you want with it yet, why would you ruin this lovely creature? Peel, slice, then add lemon and sea salt.

You've been given some great suggestions yet, if you wont even consider DOING what is being suggested....

I admire you for your determination to get going on healthy eating! The longer you stick with it, the easier it will get. I promise!!! Before I embarked on this journey 18 months ago I could barely tolerate tomatoes. Now one of my favorite meals is a couple of sliced tomatoes with a sliced avocado and a little sea salt. Yum!

You are already making yourself blended fruit drinks; try adding some romaine lettuce. Romaine is very mild and you won't taste it blended in a drink. My morning staple is this:

1 cup water
some fresh fruit such as pineapple, papaya, mango, any berries ( a mix)
romaine lettuce (start with just a few leaves and work your way up to a head)
a couple of bananas

That drink holds me all morning.

Then, get Alissa's book and try some of the dessert recipes. That will begin to give you a taste for fresh and raw.

A lot of her veggie recipes are truly delicious as they use combinations that blend together and don't taste of just one veg.

Work your way into other veg slowly and don't push it. Just let it happen and it WILL happen. And you will be so glad you have done this. Why don't you do like a lot of us have done and commit to 30 days raw? You'll find lots of support here.

Oh, and one other thing - you don't like avocado? Try blending an avocado and a couple or three ripe bananas. You may be surprised!

Good luck!

Annie

If they don't fill you up, you're not eating enough. I used to think the same. "This will NEVER satisfy me!" But it has and it does. If you're still hungry, eat more! And don't forget about nuts and seeds.

And definitely look into what Revvell said about the chocolate mousse. It's very tasty and very filling.

\Why would you come to a raw site and ask if you can fry a veggie?

hee hee, revvell - my thoughts, too!

SO. pnj. what's up with all the mental resistance? people who want to be raw usually want to at least try things to get to that place.

there are many, many lovely, helpful people here, but none of us live inside your head, so all we can do is try to help with suggestions, and everything i've read from people would have been greek to me, too, three years ago, but they are right and you will learn lots if you are open to it.

personally, i NEVER experienced satiety until i ate my first raw meal. that is a whole lifetime of eating and eating and eating because my body didn't feel satisfied because it wasn't getting the nutrients it needed. in my mind, i had to eat a lot of food, but when i am raw, i get full VERY quickly.

get alissa's book. come here for raw recipes, support in your transition, suggestions, and a friendly, raw community.

and as lovenlife said: just start, things will change.:)

pnj,
Just wondering if you liked any particular type ethnic foods? Like Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Mediterranean, etc? Might be easier to hone in on one of those style and go through the steps of vegatarian to vegan to raw?

I say...eat the foods that you DO like. Forget about the rest for now. Be as raw as you can. Your taste may change. Sending you healthy eating energy.

welcome to my world. this was/is my problem. i drink smoothies with green powder until dinner time then graze on nuts, fruits, etc. sometimes I'll have a salad, but it has to have a sweet dressing. just eat what you enjoy and venture out to try new things and soon you'll be eating more and more

when I mentioned making french fries from Jicama I ment cutting them into shape, then baking. That is how I make my 'fries'. I understand how you could misunderstand that. :) I don't eat 'normal' french fries.

As for chickpeas that aren't in a can, my local stores don't have them. I'll check a few of the other stores. Surely someone has them in this giant city.

thanks for all the suggestions. Trust me, I don't mean to seem like I am not interested in eating better. I DO want to eat better and have made major changes in the last 15 years.

Imagine eating ONLY meat, beans, cheese, bread and pasta. ugh. :)

No bake!!! No bake! Cut into fry shape and add lemon juice and salt. If you like curry, can add that too! You'll be amazed at the new flavor sensations when choosing raw. :)

No bake!!! No bake!

Rev, you have me rolling on the floor sometimes.:D

Also - to add to the jicama conversation - if you are desperate for satiety, try sprinkling some olive oil or flax oil (if you do either of those) and let them sit for 20 minutes - with the salt, and the lemon, and I add cayenne pepper to mine.....YUM!!

If you want a really quick ketchup - blend some sun dried tomatoes and dates in your liquid of choice. Voila! But they really are good just with lemon and salt, too.

And about the chickpeas - you are in a FAR better city than I am for food choices so you must have them around somewhere if I have them here - you even have several WF markets! But if this is too much to deal with right now, see what you do stumble on in the way of seeds and try to sprout that first.

The journey should be pleasurable and fun!

good luck!!!:)

pnj-- you should be able to find the non-canned chickpeas with the dried beans in the bulk sections at whole foods or any pcc coop or madison market. regular grocery stores usuallyhave them too, sold in plastic bags in the bean aisle, but i guarantee WF and madison market and PCC have them. you have to soak them and let them sprout. in my opinion though, soaked sunflower seeds make a better hummus than sprouted raw chickpeas.

When you say that you don't like vegetables, are you referring to cooked vegetables? I ask because in raw form, most veggies taste much different, and in my opinion, much better - crunchy, juicy, fresh, delicious!

Maybe start by taking a few vegetables that you do like [there must be one or two] and snacking on them raw. Some of my favourites are green beans, rutabaga, carrots, cucumber, radishes, and snow peas. I just eat them plain, but you could make a raw dip to go with if you like. Ranch is always a good choice. I've seen some pretty yummy recipes online. :)

I noticed you said, "one small leaf of kale in my drink will make me sick."

Do you know this from experience, or is it psychological?

Are you allergic to any produce?

Can you have someone else make your smoothies, and put the greens in? My kids balk at greens in smoothies, but if I put in a few leaves of spinach (and it doesn't change the color much), they don't know the difference.

Here's another suggestion: make very tiny portions for yourself, and finish what you make. Increase the portion sizes slowly.

Or: don't allow yourself to eat nonhealthily. I suspect you'll eat the produce if you don't give yourself other choices.
