Ordered "naked seed" pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds today

My hope is to reduce the need to buy questionably raw nuts and also to be more of a locavore (Tsurugi Ongi where are you?). I am excited to try this! I won't be growing enough to meet all my needs this year but it will be an experiment in how they grow in the wild climes of central Montana (can you say WIND?). I am also going to try my hand at Indian Corn for my own tortillas. No more GMO for me.

I found two varieties of naked seed pumpkins: Snack Jack and Lady Godiva (:p). The Snack Jack looks more attractive because the flesh is more edible than Lady Godiva. We shall see how they do. We have a fairly short growing season here so pumpkins don't always do well.

you would have to research this more as i dont know the details, but ive heard (here) of people planting pumpkins on piles of manure/rotting compost so that there is more heat coming up from the ground and they grow better.

Be sure to find out what those ponies are eating. Most stabled horses in our area are wormed 3x every summer with pretty nasty chemicals. Umm my horse is mostly organic if you want to bring a shovel !! Seriously though, lots of great vegis come from well composted poo piles.

yeah, its true about the manure. a shame, but true....but in the scheme of things, even using manure from treated horses (its standard to deworm them) to grow stuff may be far better/less toxic residue than you get in non organic stuff from the store. you could seek out cow manure but i think even cows and sheep etc are regularly "dosed" for worms... i wonder if organic farms are required to use only organic manures, and if so, i wonder how those animals are dewormed... or if organic farms just use regular manure...?

There is a natural deworming of horses and other livestock/pets using diatomaceous earth. Maybe you could find someone who uses that method. A site that discussed it is how I came across it for personal use.

Naked seed? Do you mean there are pumpkins whose seeds don't have the tough outer shell?

Paul Nison has a couple videos on this on YouTube. He says we can use our own waste for compost - but not on food crops.

He uses a composting toilet that he built himself (it's on the videos) and he said in a couple years time it will have composted down enough to use it on his flowers. *Ü*

Yes, naked seed pumpkin seeds are the kind you buy in the store for trail mix etc. Pepitas. they do not have to be hulled to be eaten.
