Holy cow do I need a detox, too much stress lately!
I read many good things about the MC, however I'm an ex sugar junkie. It took me 2 full years after realizing I used sugar like a drug to kick the habit, and I still can't tolerate concentrated sweets. After a looong time abstaining, I don't crave sweet things anymore or enjoy them very much.
I want a healing fast, but I don't want to trigger a GI meltdown that may take me months to resolve. Is it possible to do the MC without any sweetener? Just cayenne and lemon?
Sorry to sound so serious about this I really am super sugar sensitive :)

I am guessing not. The grade b maple syrup is what supplies you with nutrients that your body needs.

I used Raw Agave instead of the maple. Worked out well for me.

It states right in the book that other sweeteners should not be used, only grade b maple syrup -
the maple syrup is what supplies your body with all the vitamins and nutrients it needs to function for the day. If you are going to use agave, you might as well just do a water fast.

MMM. Well. Then I guess I can say I've water fasted by your standards.;) I have used the maple and the agave. I can say that for myself I had the same results either way. So you do what you feel is right for you. The reason that I used the agave on the last one I did was because of my issues with candida. Although I do believe that the MC is perfect the way it is layed out in the book... sometimes you need to adjust to your needs. I followed my instincts and it worked well for me.

I am not suggesting that everyone is the same. I am only reporting what worked for me. I am sugar sensitive and I did a 14 day MC last year using agave instead of maple syrup.
The cleanse worked wonders for me. I also juiced the whole lemon so I got something out of the rind. Mr. Burroughs suggests in the book that women would benefit from adding some of the pith to the juice.
I don't think that doing the MC without maple would be the same as a water fast, as the lemon absolutely contributes to the cleanse. Agave does add some nutrients and sugar without a very high glycemic load that could cause some of us to go into sugar shock.
I added a shot of wheat grass a few times during the fast. I just felt that my body wanted it.
I saw David Wolfe speak live last year (after my MC). Someone asked about the MC. He said that it is easy to get demineralized, so he would add a whole head of celery juice everyday of the fast.
I am sooooooooo ready to do another MC!
