Hello friends,

At first blush, my question may sound clumsy. Let me refine my question...I know some folks have slightly different definitions for "raw food" and I respect that (not sure I have figured out mine yet either ! ). What I want to hear your thoughts on is the idea that I am using a very high speed blender. Does this "kill" the living enzymes in my whole food juice? My curiosity and behavior changes associated with a raw diet revolve around getting natural and live enzymes in my food. So, if whole food juice is an important source of my nutrition, I want to make sure it is quality stuff :D

Thanking you in advance for sharing your insight to this newbie.

Jim

First off, if you're using a blender, you're not making juice ~ unless you're straining it.

Second, many here live on blended produce so no, you're not killing the nutrients although, any time produce is cut, it releases the nutrients into the air and if you're whirling it around, you'll be losing more. Still, not as bad a killing it with heat.

From what I've been learning over the past 14 years, the enzymes are not really a large part of the nutrition factor.

first off... please don't post threads in the forum assistance unless that is truly what you need ;)

second... blending your foods assists with your ability to absorb the nutrients... so it isn't harming the food or you.

Just don't let it get too hot & it'll still be raw.

Thank you for answering my question. I apologize for having posted in the wrong place...I am seeking assistance in getting my diet converted to a "raw" diet.

thanks,

If you're really worried you can preemptively refrigerate any produce that you intend to blend and perhaps add ice or frozen fruit.

Blending will reduce some of the nutrient content due to oxidation, but many people blend everyday (including me) and are very healthy. If you want to really reduce the nutrient loss, and you want to juice, you could try a masticating juicer. Many people don't invest in one, including the Rainosheks of the Juice Feasting site, because blending does a good enough job and you can use your blender for other things.

I hope this helps!

Thank you all for wonderful replies. I have read about oxidation and I do understand your point. I will research the masticating juicer. The pre-chill was also a very good idea. I have heard and read a lot about the benefits of natural and raw whole food juice so I am working raw food into my life. I have noticed simply putting fewer vegetables into my mix makes the juice much smoother and easier to drink.
