Some time ago I stopped using soap of any kind for showering, and ONLY use it on my hands or touch something very dirty or oily. Soap makes your skin and hair scalp overproduce oil. Within a couple of weeks this shouldn't a problem anymore, though this depends on whether your detoxing too, as the body detoxes through the skin as well. Of course you should also use a loofah or brush (with natural not synthetic bristles) to take care of sloughed off skin. This one of the many hot tips I intend to teach in my workshops. Better for your personal ecology and that of the planet. Not to mention your pocket/purse. What more could you ask for?

I use soap. But one of those vegetable base soap or castile. I don't have any problem over producing oil. In fact while my skin is still wet, I slather on coconut oil.

The day I started my fast I stopped using shampoo/soap. So far so good. My skin is softer, my hair doesn't smell and is more hydrated than it ever has been. I plan on sticking to lots of fruit after the fast and no oils * such so hopefully I won't need to pick any of the shampoo type stuff back up.
No deodarant either - while I've been detoxing it hasn't been pleasant (way too much garlic & onions in my diet before ;) However its slowly starting to go away and I'm hoping I will start to smell sweet soon. I probably won't be eating onions & garlic after the fast so that should stay the same as well. Quite freeing, saves money, and the earth!

Christina, that's fine. If you must use it though, always use a natural soap with no synthetic additives, preferably with added oil (what is known as a super-fatted soap). What I'm saying is once you stop using it takes usually a fortnight to for your skin to adjust if you'd be bold enough to try it (I'm aware your partner might freak out:eek:). ALL soaps, even the best ones, strip your skins oils. By the way massaging coconut oil after IS a good counter-measure. Essential oils are even better but be sure you're getting them natural sourced.

WAY TO GO!!, girl. Regardless of your diet and what the corporate schills tell you you need, I wouldn't ever use soap, shampoo, or deodorant again.

No need to stop the onions/garlic as they have many health benefits. I still like to eat onions & garlic.

A long time ago, waaaaay before raw, my cousin told me a dermatologist told her that to keep skin looking young, don't use soap. Since then, the only time I use soap is, as you say, when my hands are dirty. Otherwise, in the shower I don't at all. I have to say my skin is overall in good shape, especially on my face.

yeah it just makes sense. In the raw food lifestyle we look back to the beginning on how humans ate before "it" all changed. They didn't have soap. They jumped into the river every once in awhile and maybe rolled around in some flowers. Granted today there are a lot more pollutions all around us so we need to jump in "the river" everyday.
I stopped using soap about 2 months ago. I have the opposite problem though, my skin is dry. It's gotten better with no soap though. I dry brush daily - usually for 7-10 minutes (while watching YouTube - ha)
I don't use deoderant either. If I feel I need to, I will rub some coconut oil on my underarms.
When I get out of the shower, I usually apply organic olive or coconut oil on my wet skin. *Ü*

Yeah, Rawcstacy..I love my coconut oil. What would I use to shave? I use my natural soap now. But if I stopped using soap..? I'm not sure I'm ready to make that step yet. :(

You rock!!
Yeah, Rawcstacy..I love my coconut oil.
Keep it up!:)
What would I use to shave? I won't answer that on the grounds that it's violates my naturist/natural living ethics. FYI, I prefer members of the opposite sex that are well, natural. Don't reply, instead watch for my upcoming thread.

C'mon Cristina, why don't you join us in 100 day soap fast? The rest of us on the thread so far are going to do it, we'd hate to leave you out.;)

Mission statement for March 24th: I must help Christina see the (natural)light. Natural is best;).

Think Rawcstacy also meant a shave fast. I love having silky smooth parts so as much as I love being natural, I'm still gonna shave. Not to mention it starts to itch/be uncomfortable growing back in some areas.
I use Dr. Bronner's baby or almond soap for showering & shaving. Rather feel completely clean than chance it. Though I am into natural methods so if it can work for you, great.

Back in the day I used Dr. Bronner's peppermint myself, can't say it's a bad choice for those who insist on using.

No, only soap, Cristina is the one who brought it up:p, take it over to the new thread please.

Just say no to soap?
Just say no to mindless consumerism and waste.
I would be interested in knowing more about this. I have heard of people who don't use soap, but just do dry brushing to get off all the skin cells. I am open to this, especially as I have very dry skin (although I'd still have to wash my hands with that awful anti-bacterial stuff as I'm a medical student and would be forced to use it). However while I could attempt to shower without the soap, my head would be the problem, as I get buildup on my scalp if I don't shampoo (which would cause unsightly dandruff). How do you get around it? Are there any natural products that could eliminate the scalp buildup without drying the skin over the scalp?

On a completely unrelated note, I'd ask you to reconsider the above. Although onions and garlic are considered 'healthy' based on the medical literature, there is a lot of stuff considered 'healthy' in medicine that isn't really good for you. My dad, who also happens to be a doc, has been going on an on about how healthy coffee is according to the medical literature as it is claimed to have lots of antioxidants... but obviously that's so short-sighted, as just because a food has a few good properties doesn't outweigh the negative. Garlic and onions are the same way. They affect your mind in a negative way, disrupting the communication between both hemispheres of the brain and making you more prone to emotional outburst. Sure it might be good for your cholesterol, but I'd definitely like to pass on something that negatively affects my mind and moods. Sorry to go off topic, but I just thought I'd throw that in there. I am very holistic, and try to look at the overall picture.

RKK, what is the source of your information?
Hi all,
um, dare I ask... how do you remove your make-up? Or should I assume everyone here doesn't wear make-up?
I don't that often, but when we go out on the weekends I like to "dress up" a little...
Suggestions?
I currently use an organic Olive Oil Kiss My Face soap.
Oh, and I also stopped using regular deodorant a few months ago and am so glad I did! I thought I'd stink or sweat a lot, but that hasn't been the case. I've been using the "crystal rock" instead... I'm assuming that qualifies as natural?
Oh (again)... I LOVE onions and garlic!!! And I eat them very often on the raw food diet. Rkk, I'd be interested in the source of your info as well.
thanks!

Joya, I started using bad for you deodorant again because that crystal rock thing was ripping my skin up! I heard that after you use it for a while, the polished part wears down and you start feeling the uneven, though slight, cracks of the rock. I read that if you dry it off with a towel after use, that helps prolong the smooth finish. I did that and it still didn't last long enough before it was scratching my skin. Any suggestions to nature deoderant. Oh, and I've tried Tom's natural deodorant and it made my arms red and peel! I had to use it like 2 times or more a day in the summer. Have you tried any natural liquid deodorants or anything?

Dr. Gabriel Cousens has written about the effects of garlic and onions affecting our brain hemisphere communication, as I mentioned above. You can also do a search on Dr. Robert Beck's studies on garlic. Spiritual people on the path of yoga also avoid garlic and onions as they disrupt meditation (especially due to Dr. Cousen's reasons of the brain activity being changed). I like the taste or garlic and onions as well, but I'm doing my best to avoid them since I'm convinced they aren't good for us. Anyway, I don't want to hijack this thread on this topic, but if someone is truly interested in knowing more, do a websearch or PM me.

I go soapless in the summer..guess it's bc I'm sleeveless and my body breathes better. In the cold, I smell horrible. Would love to go soapless. I have to use a specific soap and am out. I get it from Ashville and I'm 2hrs away! Now, I have a horrible rash in one armpit. A little off topic but...has anyone noticed the change in fabrics of new clothes? I bought some shirts..they smelled like fabric softener but I wore without washing. the next morning, my underarm was broke out like a contact dermatitis like I get when I use towels from anyplace except home....just curious.

I don't use soap, except on my hands.
There's no need for it, especially after begining a 100% raw diet.
If I need any cleaning agents at all (usually warm water and a washcloth will do) I use bicarb soda or floral water.
I'm holding a Raw Beauty workshop soon on this every subject in June, we are so hoodwinked into believing we NEED all these products, cleansers, toners, soaps, shampoo, conditioner etc...
It's so freeing to not need them!

I can't imagine going without soap. :) I use a coconut/shea butter soap with essential oils added, handmade by a friend. It is the best!
I have met a lot of rawbies, a very huggy bunch of people. I can tell you for sure that some of them NEED SOME SOAP! Who was it that said rawbies don't get B.O. ???

ROFLOL! :D I currently use Kiss My Face Olive Oil Soap for my body and occasionally for my face. I usually rub some coconut oil on my face before I shower and then just let the warm water do the rest. Even with dry skin brushing and coconut oil (it has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties) my arm pits need something extra. I sometimes use Tom's of Maine Unscented deodorant but am using it less and less. Then there are those times that I don't use it and wish I had!

 OMGoodness! New clothes are filled with all sorts of fabric additives and dust from storage not to mention the possibility of left over product from some person trying it on before you did. Always wash new clothes before wearing them. Trying them on is bad enough, but wearing them with all that stuff rubbing into your skin? Yech!

Have to add my two cents worth here. Before I went raw, I noticed that after I ate onions I was incredibly thirsty. As in simply could NOT drink enough water. Now, being raw for 15 months, if I eat onion, whether fresh or dehydrated, I get the worst onion B.O. for days. I haven't looked into how my mind works after eating them but I know I can't stand the way I smell after eating them. As for garlic, I haven't noticed anything other than my family complains that I smell like garlic.
RKK - So glad to know that there are open minded people in/going into the medical profession. Many thanks!
