View Full Version : Sprouting coconuts?

Does anyone have any experience and/or info on sprouting coconuts? How do you go about sprouting them? I tried gooogling it but got mixed results.
any help? I hear a frothy layer forms on the inside (that the coconut uses to grow and is thus filled with everything the coconut needs to grow-vitamins and minerals and all that) and that it is sweet and like spongy cake.
thanks in advance!! :)

They will just sprout on their own. I have a couple in my backyard and if they fall before I use them they just hang out and then a little tree pops out. I haven't tried the spongy stuff but I have heard that its edible.
I would just keep them outside in sunlight & they should grow.

They do taste a little sweet. a little fat, a little oily all at the same time. I'd eat them again, but only if there's no young coconut around.

Really? you don't need to plant them in the ground or anything? cool. Too bad I live in the northeast lol but maybe if I try it during the warm summer months coming up. I wonder if its better to eat them sprouted or if they just get older/ really mature and lose all the water because it takes a long time to sprout? Thanks for the info!
I know, young coconut is sooo delicious. But at the same time, middle aged coconut is delicious too! According to the beliefs of ancient India, the "middle aged" stage is the healthiest stage at which to consume the coconut. Followed by the young coconut (cooling) and then the mature, which is healthy but supposedly can be a little more acidic on the system.
Thanks for your comparison on the flavors :) A google thing I read said it tasted like sweet angel food cake lol.

No you don't have too but its best if they naturally fall from the tree just like out in the wild. I don't think every coconut will sprout especially if its been husked, refrigerated and what not.
Here's a great video on coconuts:
You might like watching this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqZ6JmTzaD4&feature=sub)that was posted today on coconut sprouts! *Ü*
This is an interesting:) concept. I never thought to sprout coconuts.

thanks for the videos Deb and Siovahn! They were great to watch. Perhaps I will have to wait until I am living somewhere more tropical to try a sprouted coconut. I am thinking of transferring to a school in FL so maybe I'll get that opportunity sooner than I think.
Now I just wonder if eating the unsprouted coconuts from the store is unhealthy...like I mean I don't eat nuts/seeds that I don't soak or sprout (I only eat them germinated) so I wonder if it is not good to eat the coconuts bought in the store? I usually get the white middle aged ones (not young thai) btw. any thoughts?
Hi Lunar Fey ~ John Kohler had a blurb about sprouted coconuts in today's video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2Aai383swk&feature=sub)and said he was going to talk more about them in an upcoming video. You might like to subscribe so you don't miss it. *Ü*
