I ordered some cacao butter from Amazon (Matt Monarch was the seller). I opened it up and noticed the smell was overwhelmingly strong. I made some chocolate mixture from a recipe I found for peanut butter cups and the thing is the taste of the chocolate is sooooo overpowering. I mean it almost tastes rancid. It states that cacao butter has a delicate smell, but this is ridiculous. Can anyone clue me in to their experiences with cacao before I call this company for a refund? Thanks in advance :)

I've ordered Cacao butter before from sunfood only. The smell is yummy, a dark chocolate smell. The taste on its own is almost like dark chocolate but a little different. In the recipes I;ve used it in the chocolate flavour is very strong, you really dont need much of it to give anything a chocolatey flavour.

I've used Sunfood cacao butter that was fine stored in the cupboard for more than a year after it was opened. When I finally used it up and got a different brand I was surprised how much sweeter and lighter it was. Could be the cacao butter was getting old and rancid and I didn't notice the difference. Interetingly, the new brand said to store in the fridge. It is supposed to last for a long time, but it is a fat which means it can get rancid.
Doubt that helps you. :) I can tell you my experience is that it does not hurt to complain to the source. Then you don't have to wonder or hold a grudge, and quite often you get a free replacement product or gift certificate.

huh. i got one from i think gabriel cousins site and i thought it was horrid. it didnt have the dark choc smell someone else is talking about, and its really waxy. i thought it was horrid. funny cuz you find websites talking about how delicious it is. ick. not a fan. ill stick with the "chocolate rocks/chocolate chunks" that come in a pound bag from natural zing and are compressed chocolate. so the cocoa butter is already in there and the things melt beautifully.
