View Full Version : What raw foods do you NOT eat?

Sarain

There are some raw foods that I don't eat for different reasons:

Mushrooms- give me a headache.
Peppers- I can't stand the taste
garlic/onions- give me gas, bloating, a headache and make me feel faint.
Kambucha- makes me feel ill like I just drank a bottle of sugar.

I'm interested in knowing what raw foods others can't eat and why?

oh yeah and garlic/onions also make my tongue burn, turn bright red, and swell for days after I eat it. Anyone have any ideas of what I can use in place of garlic as I do love the taste.

Why are people so crazy about kombucha? Might as well just have a bottle of coke! Makes me have the same sugar crash and yeast like itching anyways.
Young coconuts and avocatos make me feel really calm and grounded even though I live in Vancouver B.C...So I buy them. I think if I was to just eat the veggies/fruit that grow in this area I would get really sick of being raw fast.

I don't eat peanut or cashew--tendency to develop mold spores

I steer clear of agave - don't know what the heck that stuff is anyway! that other one - yukon? ditto

avoid *really raw* onions and garlic - will do onion bread in the D, and I have used pickled garlic and it didn't give me that spaced out feeling. But straight off the cutting board - onions I don't like, garlic makes me feel drugged.

Can't think of anything else I actively avoid.....

Mushrooms. Well, if at a raw potluck or something and there's a dish with them, I'll try them.

I don't eat them since I posted a thread about them a while back and saw a vid that said they contain agaratines ---and should be cooked.

So I actually cook them(but only eat occasionally) --and add to raw dishes.

T-Bird

Found this marykay:

The highest amount of agaritine is found in the cap and gills of the fruiting body, and the lowest in the stem.[8] Agaritine oxidizes rapidly upon storage, however, and is totally degraded after 48 hours in aqueous solution with exposure to air.[9] It has also been shown to decompose readily upon cooking (up to 90% reduction) as well as upon freezing (up to 75% reduction).[10]

From the above, just being in the fridge may degrade these sufficiently.
I sprinkle my thinly sliced mushrooms with evoo, acv, salt and pepper and put in the D at 118, wonder how that impacts it..

All of these foods I've really enjoyed eating. I have chosen to stop eating for the time being until my body may heal first. I've always really LOVED my Broccoli..:(

-Red/Green Cabbage: Bloated & Gassy
-Baby Cabbage (Brussel Sprouts): Burns my throat, Bloated & Gassy
-Broccoli/Zucchini/Cauliflower: Painfully Bloated/Gassy
-Salt: Bloated
-Rutabagas (not too sure) had some SHARP pains the other night after eating a whole cup raw...will have to see if it wasn't something else.

So many of us have come to this way of life because of years of poor health. And now we want to respect our bodies by listening to what they really want and need, and not just eat something because other raw vegans do.

I also don't eat peanuts because of the mold thing.

Onions - stinky
Garlic - stinky
Beans - gas
Squash - just never thought of eating them raw except for zucchini I do like zucchini
oil - pure fat
peanuts - mold
mushrooms - fungus
stopped eating hot peppers, I do love them but I'm pretty sure they burn my insides.

I wish coconuts, avocados, mangos, papayas... could grow in BC
Its my dream to grow them here... one day

Tomatoes - Fresh, raw tomatoes make my complexion break out in big cyst like blemishes. I didn't pin tomatoes down as the cause until this past winter when I wouldn't have any for weeks at a time. I can eat them without that reaction if they are sundried and in a marinara sauce that has been heated in the dehydrator to 115 degrees.

Root vegetables - I can eat root vegetables in a salad, juice or recipe if they are combined with other vegetables. Eating them alone, NO way. Munching on a single bite of carrot or piece of celery root gives me instant heartburn, with choking, and a strange painful burping. I had a simliar but much more intense reaction to eating a few slices of peeled jerusalem artichoke. It brought on severe mucus that didn't stop coming up for 30 minutes. Odd, because I had eaten them a year before and loved 'em. It was so awful I will never eat jerusalem artichokes again.

Nori - it makes me gag for different reasons. :p

I love garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables. :)

:) We are all different in our likes/dislikes and our tolerances can change dramatically as we travel along the raw path.

Because I'm just at the beginning of my rawjourney I have to expirience more.

BUT, I do not eat celery, in any kind, hate the taste.

I do not like blended tomatoes, I love them sliced or dried but cannot stand the texture and taste of a fresh one after it was blended.

Anything else, I need to try, so give it to me.

I'm cutting out nightshades right now to see if it helps but it's tough. I make my own kombucha and it's great stuff. I had a bad sinus infection and it wouldn't go away after one round of antibiotics, so I drank some strong kombucha and it was gone the next morning! Kombucha and acv keeps me healthy.

crystalchild

nightshades-allergic

carrots, beets, fruits (exept cucumbers, avos, and usually fermented but sometimes normal coconut water)-im on a low fructose diet

cashews and peanuts- just dont digest well

mung beans sprouts-headaches

mushrooms-after learning how they are manufactured and grown i was disgusted.

viniger-stomach ache

i DO eat small amounts of cooked veggies, low glycemic grains, and legumes esp. this cold season.
the nuts i eat are in small amounts a lot of times in the form of "butters" because too many make my intestines hurt.
i cook or ferment all cruciferous vegetables because if i dont i get bloated.

This is a great thread. :)

I am close to 7 years raw now and I don't eat:

mushrooms - they make me feel very wired, like out of control. This is a terrible feeling for me.

cantaloupe - I'm allergic to it

cashews - I used to eat a lot of these but I've stopped wanting them for about a year now.

celery - I used to like it but it doesn't taste good to me anymore

corn - makes me really bloated and very gassy

tomatoes - I only eat these in July/August

garlic - I used to eat tons of this but one day I just stopped using it and I haven't looked back. Now, if I'm eating food that others have prepared and there is garlic in it, I notice that I get very bloated, stomach pains, and gassy. The stomach pains are very bad.

mangoes - I'm allergic to it

oil - I haven't used this in about 2 years.

salt - I don't put salt in my own food anymore. Now, if I'm eating food that others have prepared and there is salt in it, I get bloated.

nuts (in general) - I'm noticing that I'm eating less and less nuts as I'm continuing down the raw path.

wheatgrass - nasty

Root Vegetables - very rarely do I eat these.

Peppers - Once in a while, I will have a red bell pepper, but I don't eat any others.

I avoid raw nut butters, but love eating a moderate amount of nuts and seeds.

I eat some raw hemp oil, mainly because I like the taste.

I don't use tamari or Bragg's. I've never tasted kombucha (sp?) or agave, and probably won't.

I really like raw mushrooms, but got a huge stomach ache the last time I ate them. Probably bad food combining, but I'll avoid them for a while.

Haven't had garlic or onions for a while, and don't miss them.

I love all fruits (except dragonfruit), but an abundance of greens everyday seems to be hard on my system, so I go a little easy.

I avoid algaes, because they seem a little heavy for me. But I love seaweeds, especially nori (for nori rolls with greens, a bit of sprouted kamut, lemon juice, some avo or hemp oil....)

What I will NOT eat, or am learning to not eat:

-Nuts/nut butters/seeds (fattening and addicting)
-Honey and agave (fattening, too sweet)
-Green smoothies (disgusting, like drinking grass)
-Dates/bananas/high-sugar fruits (too much sugar)
-Sprouted grains (or any grains for that matter)

I'm trying to somehow eat low-carb and stay raw. I know this is a vegan website, but that's definitely something I don't do. Raw is by far the best diet I've ever done, but the more I read on the harmful effects of carbs, the harder it is to stay raw since so many raw foods are high in carbs.

And btw, I think kombucha is amazing! It makes me feel so much better when I'm sick, or even when I'm depressed. Literally my favorite drink.

Wow. Seems like you have cut out most of the raw foodists staples. What do you eat? And you do know that there are carbs and then there are carbs right?;)

Yeah, that's why I'm having a hard time staying raw right now!

And that's what I always thought--the whole good carbs, bad carbs thing, but I've been doing a lot of research and am starting to come to the conclusion that it's not good to eat too many carbs just in general. Perhaps if they were just from veggies, and I cut out the sugary fruits...I don't like fruit much anyways, and the sugars give me headaches. I'm going shopping tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to find some good raw staples. It's the only diet that I've ever had success on!

Well, when I first started raw, I DID eat nuts and dates, so I suppose there was a small difference. My successes included weight loss, clearer skin, more positive mood, and just a feeling of cleanliness and purity...I am starting to eat raw again, I never completely gave it up but just started eating lots of dairy and grains and that killed it. I've gained lots of weight too so I'm really not happy. The fasting and raw are what have given me the most success, even though I was never 100% raw. The only real difference now is that I want to avoid the carbs...

Just wondering, but have any of you experienced different results from garlic when you de-stem the clove first?

My List:
- radishes: I tried them and the first bite was mild (trying to get over my kindergarten "try-a-new-food day" grudge), but it gradually built up spicy-peppery-ness
- grapefruit: soourrr (though I love lemons :p)
- mushrooms: I try not to buy them on my own due to the fact that I've heard that they aren't that great for the body served raw & the concept of eating fungus. I'll still eat some if it's at a raw restaurant or potluck, though.
- durians: Do I need an explanation? Eww! º^º
- sprouts: Only at restaurants/potlucks. I'm currently too lazy to make them myself, and I have heard some controversial info that doesn't motivate me.
- nori/most seaweed: Meh. Don't care for the overpowering ocean flavor.
- spicy peppers: Me=/=spicy

P.S. I LOVE Kombucha! Especially the kind with only a little ginger juice added to it, it's not sugary but still tastes like ginger ale! :D

I don't eat:

Crack-cao, I mean Ca-cao (been clean of it for the last month, anyhow), substitute with carob;
agave (read my posts, if you haven't already);
all Tubers: potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, etc;
peanuts (NOT a nut, legume actually);
all other legumes (sprouts ARE ok);

Occasionally I would eat:

WILD (non-commercial) mushrooms as long they aren't toxic varieties. I also like pineapples but generally avoid them due to acidic effect on tooth enamel.

ChristinaJade, I don't eat those things raw either, but do eat them occasionally cooked.

Except for wheatgrass. I drink it all the time and I also hate it. H A T E it when it's plain. But I add it to things and can drink it then. I'll even dilute it with water if needs be. I've even gotten my kids to drink it when it's mixed with (for them) generally sweet fruit juices.

Give it a try that way. It's got so many benefits, it's worth it. IMO anyway. Growing it is cheap and easy.

Mary Kay, I eat beans cooked too. I've been meaning to experiment more with wheatgrass but I remember trying it and wanting to puke!

I've also noticed the link between weight gain and nuts for me. I stopped eating my nut filled granola and a lot of nut recipes and lost the 2 lbs I had gained. Then after I lost those 2 lbs, I ended up eating more nut recipes and gained 2 lbs again. In 4 days those nuts creep up on me!! And...its not like I'm shoving my face full of them either. I think the combination of raw cheese itz, which have raw cashews in them and the raw granola over the last 4 days, definitely did it. Tomorrow, its back to green smoothies, salads, fruits and veggies and of course my daily coffee that I'm not ashamed to admit! ;):p

I was OK with it's special taste the first time I tried it, but it seems an acquired taste for many (puking smiley here (they really need to improve the smiley menu here:()).

Adding pineapple to it is quite neat, or banana or both (yummy smiley), I wouldn't recommend "watering" it down, unless you're doing a water fast.

Salty? Maybe they really aren't raw, be careful they're not roasted/salted.

kiwi - hairy....they just plain freak me out.

Once you peel them, the inside is quite delicious, especially the golden variety.

It's good to go into raw foods with a clean slate and forget about what you ate in "the cooked food" past. Try anything as if it's the first time you're tasting it.

Then, you probably don't like jicima, huh? Another one of my favorites.

Kiwi- Do you peel it or just eat it w/ the skin. I don't like the taste of the skin so much, but I have had it that way, too. The yellow kiwi is really good. Better than the green.

It was interesting to me that no one has mentioned not eating raw cacao--I thought for sure I would see that one listed. I never knew some of the stuff about it that someone (Rawcstacy?) posted when I answered a post in which Joya asked about foods that are supposed to help with lungs.

What a cool thread! It reminds me of this diet a biochemist did for me after doing blood/stool analysis - I thought it was strange that certain foods were OK and similar foods were not....but this thread seems to show the uniqueness of everyone here!

For me,

Apples - relatively new

Bananas & Oranges - can eat small amounts only
Corn - love it, but makes me really stuffed up
Nuts/Nutbutters/Coconut Oil - used to love them, but now they have little appeal
Green Peppers - unripe, can't digest
Agave -if it is in a small quantity in a recipe, i might not notice it, but it just looks and smells like HFCS to me

And I must be the odd one who loves kombucha, mushrooms, garlic, and grapefruit, which seems to have gotten a lot of thumbs down here. :)

What a cool thread!

So are you!:D

Sometimes they actually mix it in to the so-called "pure" agave.:(

I'd love to eat to seaweeds and some garlic mushroom sauce with you, what do you say then? You'll have to eat the grapefruit without me though.;)

Freelee,

Just curious - I hope you don't mind...being so low fat, how are your periods and how old are you?

Thanks,

Mary Kay

Hey MK, My periods are great, I have them for about 3days, the first day is a few teaspoons and the next few days hardly anything. Always without fail if I increase my fat intake the blood and pain increases.

Im 30 this year

I don't eat:

Superfoods--they are like crack to me, WAY too stimulating
Cacao--same reason
Garlic--I like it but it doesn't like me
Any onions other than green onions (chives)--same thing with garlic--too harsh
Peppers other than red, yellow, or orange bell peppers
Corn--gives me excess mucus
Nuts--I don't digest them well at all and they make tired and sluggish
Bitter greens--I stick to tender mild greens like romaine
Sprouted grains--I've read enough about grains to convince me that they aren't ideal human foods and they are difficult to digest

I eat pretty simply so I'm sure there's more but thats all I can think of for now.

Blessings.

Audrey

If we were meant to eat grains we would have a gullet.

If you can not make a meal of it then we did not evolve to eat it and therefore we are going against nature if we do.
