Howdy! Been high raw about a month and I must say I love it:)
The only thing is...I'm eating bananas. All the time.
Once I made it through a large bunch and a half in one day.
Now, while I was researching about raw food it said you'd crave what your body needed. My mother however is nervous about my potassium levels and has limited me to three a day.
I'm wondering how much really IS too much? [Info: I'm a 14 year old girl]
My mother is looking for a nutritionist to help advise me on what I need, but I wanted some people in the raw community to help too, just in case I can't find a raw vegan nutritionist.
Thanks for the help everyone and have a happy raw day:)

Hehehe... I've done that... Still do once in awhile. :D
I've heard of people only eating bananas for some period of time. I think they call it being on "Banana Island" when they do this. I think its a great way of somewhat resting your digestive system.

I love just eating them alone or in a smoothie is when I consume a lot in one day.

I've never heard of anyone eating too many bananas to actually cause damage or an overdose in potassium, however too many bananas can cause constipation.

they are just so yum! hahaha
i've never gotten constipation from eating too many before and I'd think I'd get at least minor unpleasant results if I were eating too much of something I didn't need...
I was just nervous about potassium. Thanks for the insight:)

I have already had several days where all I want to eat are bananas! Bananas by the bunch; breakfast, supper, lunch :D

Some would say that you can eat as much potassium as you want, as long you balance it with natural sodium (kale and celery being prime examples).

Some days, I eat ten bananas. Other days, I eat none. I'm a flat-out intuitive eater, though, and fortunately I'm ten years older than you and get to be my OWN Mother now. ;)

The only instance I am aware of where a person endangered their health with bananas was when a man ate NOTHING BUT bananas for about ten days or more.

If you're also eating lots of OTHER foods, I wouldn't be concerned. :)

Variety = the spice of Raw. ;)

Hi everyone

i had somethign like that with bananas and i think its okey to eat as much fruit as you like i would uust do a simple test if its really a wish of your body or something else wanting to compensate a emotional need

just lay your ahdn on your belly and ask is eating many bananas good for me and then feel how your belly feels, is it stiff, or is it soft and relaxed does ist feel good in any way.

i hope i could help a bit.

Greetings JinAna

Well, I've not heard of people having problems from too much potassium from eating bananas, but you can kind of OD on sugar. While the wilder bananas are lower in sugar, grocery store bananas are bred to have a as high a sweetness level as possible. So eating a lot of them amounts to something similar to binging on candy. I wouldn't eat more than one a day, if that.

The potassium is only a problem if you have preexisting kidney problems -- otherwise your body should have no problem dealing with the excess. Some other fruits like cantaloupes and avocados are actually higher in potassium than bananas, too :)

That is news for me! Do you mean weakened kidney or kidney stone problem?

If they don't bother you, eat them!! Your body will let you know when it has had enough. Only you and God know what is good for your own body. Have at it!!

Your mom is looking out for her baby, so try an educate yourself and help her along with your journey. It has always amazed me that people think healthy food will cause harm but junk is never given a second thought. I hope you find a vegan nutritionist. I think you are way ahead for your age and health starts the day your born.

Mostly weakened kidney problems, like chronic kidney disease -- I don't think kidney stones play a role at all. Your kidneys are responsible for removing excess potassium, so when they fail, the potassium builds up in your body and causes hyperkalemia (high potassium).

I've eaten upwards of 40 bananas a day, at least 3 or 4 times a week for the past three months...I have nothing but boundless energy and happiness, no potassium or constipation problems here!

My word!! I'll say! How absolutely amazing!

I was hungry the other day and had nothing at hand except bananas so I ended up eating about 5 of them throughout the day. Apart from the sheer hunger which was what was motivated me to do this it was a little hard to get them down. I was sick of them by the third! I also found that it affected my elimination too without going in to too much detail..
Bananas are in season now, down here, but since that episode I have abstained from bananas to give my body a break for a bit.

MsTrish sounds like a sweetie...She must be a mom.

I don't feel that the OP is eating too many bananas IF you are not overweight, are active, and don't have any blood sugar problems.

There is a raw food guru named Doug Graham who advocates a high-fruit diet ---some of his followers even have a Yahoo? group started ...something like 20bad...."bad" stands for "bananas-a-day." Yet even he things you must be active when you eat that much "sugar" as you must "earn your fruit."
