They generally have too much salt so I do not use them anymore.

I use them occasionally - price on raw olives is certainly steep.
No problems noticed....

If you're talking about Olives from the store, I doubt you'll find them raw. That aside, I've had my share of store-bought olives myself and I agree they don't make me feel so great. Usually 'cause I overindulge.
Try some raw sun-dried saltless peruvian olives from the interwebs. They are notably bitter, but I got used to that quickly and they're bomb on the tastebuds.

Olives in brine are pasteurized. Krinos have "Oil Cured" olives that are not in brine, but I never got a word back from them about whether or not they are heated/pasteurized. They're much too salty anyhow.

maybe ones in a jar or can that you can keep for forever, but olives from an olive bar or the ones in alittle plastic pot they have at the supermarket, are they heated also?

They are not vegan either unless it specifically says so. I asked the man at the olive counter in Wild Oats if he had any vegan olives and he said "no chance".

I have never heard this in my entire life.....if you buy a bottle that says "kalamata olives, olive, salt" - I mean really - what's not to veg?

I'm not sure about the olive bars - the probably just open up 25-50 pound vats to fill them.
Are those vat raw - unpasteurized? The liability issue for food producers is why everyone pasteurizes anyway.
I mail order along with my other "hard to get really raw" supplies...like cashews, chocolate, macca, dates, etc.

I think that it may be lactic acid.

I will eat any olive on this page (http://www.rawvegansource.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi). Olives add a nice punch to a salad when I want something different. I don't eat them as much as I used to though. I think the salt is finally getting to me.
My favorite olives are the big, juicy, buttery green olives from "Raw Earth Organics". Both the sicilian and the jalapeno stuffed are excellent. I like to keep a quart jar in the fridge. I eat about 5-6 olives a week. I'm out right now cause I don't want to spend the $12. :(
There is an olive bar at a local store that sells black olives the size of plums. Very tempting. If the lactic acid doesn't concern you what would be the harm in indulging once in a while. I read an article by a famous raw "guru" that thinks it is better to eat canned olives than the salty raw olives. I don't agree with him, but each of us has to do what works for us at the time.

Those are the olive bar ones. Many jarred brands, like Mazetta, are not preserved, and while perhaps not raw, I enjoy kalamatas on my raw pizzas and salads from time to time, and since I don't eat agave or other questionably raw products, I don't have a problem with it.

I buy raw olives from Wholefoods. They are raw, vegan, and the company that produces them offsets the emissions needed to transport them by their farming/processing methods. :)
I pay $5.99 for a 14 oz. jar and the jar usually lasts me a couple weeks. They're green, and yummmmmmmmmy.
I love olives. :D
I also splurge occasionally on the sun-dried black olives... those are harder on my stomach though. Too spicy, or too salty, generally, for my taste buds. But 2 or 3 are a nice touch to any salad!

Don't recall and not at home today, but they are currently the only raw olives sold by Wholefoods. :)

ALso wondering the brand name. I scoured our whole foods for raw olives but couldn't find any even though they had a HUGE selection of olives. :(

thats right most olives are pasturized but at whole foods their olives in the olive bar are raw as they say and they also sell olives that are raw but they a specifically label raw.
I bought a package of sundried Botija olives (organic/low sea salt) from Vivapura. They are to live for! I'm totally addicted now.
Looove them! They are wonderfully nutritious!;)

olives are not vegan? Ouh no!! No no no! Have to do some more research about that... might be different in australia?
edit:
researched, according to a vegan forum and wikipedia Lactic acid can either be "1)a colourless compound, commonly used as a food additive for flavour and preservation. It is usually produced chemically from coal, petroleum, and natural gas, or biologically from the bioconversion of carbohydrates and plant biomass or 2) Lactic Acid: a by-product of the slaughterhouse. Produced by the fermentation of lactose when milk sours or from sucrose and some other carbohydrates by the action of certain micrcoorganisms. Can be found in blood and muscle tissue (etc. etc.)"
BUT "most commercially used lactic acid is derived from bacteria such as Bacillus acidilacti, Lactobacillus delbueckii or L. bulgaricuswhey to ferment carbohydrates from sources such as the cornstarch, potatoes or molasses"
(from veggieboards.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-60372.html)
You scared me guys!

Buying an olive tree i guess is the solution here, more olives for everybody!!
The only jar of raw olives i have bought where from 'detox your world' they were around £5 a jar and were very nice, although the way i go through them far to expensive.
I am an olive addict who is currently getting no olives, i made a big mistake by buying some cheap ones and they were horrible and mushy! the salt oh the salt!!
