I have used them in the past and the results have been obvious. Much less discolouration to my fruits and greens. Would love to hear other people's experiences with ceramic products... I have just ordered 4 ceramic pocket knives, can't wait for them to arrive! Also there is a ceramic peeler on the market which look interesting but I've never used it.

It's interesting that you start this thread, I was just thinking about this. It seems a lot of the YT vids I've been watching lately are of people using ceramic knives and it got me to thinking. I went out and bought these expensive knives last year...but now I'm thinking I want ceramic knives instead. I'm really impressed with them.

I have a ceramic paring knife and a ceramic peeler. I love them because they are super sharp and don't rust. The one downside is that they can stain, but don't if you actually rinse them after using instead of just leaving them covered in residue. I want to buy a chef's knife, because I have a 10" Shun chef's knife and 1) a chunk of it broke off when I was cracking open a coconut, and 2) it shows signs of rust with very little use and good care. Very disappointing.

Ummm, well, it's a knife. Whether you cut yourself with ceramic, steel, etc. is totally up to you. Stop it! ;)

I had forgotten we had a ceramic knife for quite some time. I was constantly worried that I'd drop it and break it ~ so I did. Once that was done, I didn't need to do it again. It was my favorite knife until it disappeared. GOTS to get another! They are THE sharpest, lovely knives I've ever used! Do NOT try to open a coconut with them though. They're sharp yet fragile. I have a ceramic peeler as well. Ceramic is GREAT!

I got one but one day I noticed that it was missing a bit so I looked through my food and found the piece in the food. That bothered me so I got rid of it. I am not risking having a sharp piece of ceramic either in my mouth or my intestines.

Was it a good quality ceramic knife?

I've seen Alton Brown discussing ceramic knives before. It's suggested you use different cutting surfaces for them, to avoid the chipping. He may have said something about not using them on pitted fruits too. I believe the cutting surface needs to be softer, maybe it was bamboo that was recommended - and you can't chop as aggressively as with a steel knife IIRC. I forget exactly, going from memory of an older show. Don't let the chipping deter you though Aleesha.
Sport, don't take me wrong, I'm not implying you used your knife wrong. It could have been other causes.

I can not say that if it was good but it was expensive. I got it at Williams and Sanoma. It was large and had a pink handle. I have just looked at their website but can not find any. I bought it in the shop.

The Kyocera company makes the best ones, and they come in various colors. They are sometimes available at Williams-Sonoma, and I have always bought mine at Sur la Table, which also carries the knives online.

My grandfather, pretty much a knife expert, told me that people usually cut themselves with a dull knife because you apply more force and it slips. I have actually found this true in my life - ouch!

Cool sounds like they're pretty popular, that chipping doesn't sound good but it could be due to cutting on inappropriate surfaces. I just ordered some ceramic pocket knives, they are black and very cool, here's a pic...

I am half thinking lately that it is karma. I have one knife that has caused all of my cuts in the past year. The others are inoffensive but one that I am now a bit scared of. I think that there was a lot of anger in the person that made it.

quite possibly sport. i believe very much in that as well.

as for me cutting myself. i have a set of knives and my hubby has his own. his are super sharp (and even he has been cutting himself lately which is actually odd for him) mine are kept less sharp but still sharp.

if i use one of his knives, i'm almost sure to end up cut - even though i don't go into it with that thought... but i seldom cut myself with mine anymore. i know... i'm weird... no need to tell me again *rolls eyes and giggles at self*

Well, there is a universal concept here. Karma in some form or by some name (like the laws of sowing and reaping) appear in virtually all ancient book and in the roots of virtually all religions.

In fact, being raw vegan is interesting in that it meets all religious eating laws I have ever encountered. A representative of each I am sure is on this site and could confirm it - although I do not believe we should go there.

Coming back to the thread... Ceramics in some form have been a part of human history virtually as long as there was a human history. Ceramic knives are not new either... They date back to as early as man began making ceramic pots and broke one! I am sure I am not the only one here who as cut himself with a piece of ceramic that was not a knife!

As for ceramic knives, I would love to try one since I saw a CSI where it was the murder weapon! I happen to think that metal things have a huge amount of negative energy. But I haven't found them in stores - Yet! Where I live it would be very common to eat with my Chinese friends using chopsticks and ceramic spoons!

For those who feel a connection to the earth, ceramics are a delightful addition. Ceramic chopsticks, spoons and even wheatgrass growing trays are available.

Just as a cutting thought!
