I think recipes with oats make great transition foods to take the shock out of not eating bread anymore, even if they are not raw.

I use gluten free oats and was not aware they are not considered raw.
At the beginning I had used them in veggie burgers but haven't lately. I think I will e-mail Bob's Red Mill and see what they say.
I called and here's the explanation I was given. They are steam injected (at 212º) to stabilize them by removing the fat enzymes, otherwise they would go rancid in storage.

Yep, oats are steamed. That goes for oat groats, too. Bummer - I used to love them! But I've seen some advertisements from raw food companies for really raw oats. If you're comfortable buying online, you could probably find something. I can't recommend any websites or brands, though - I don't eat oats anymore.

I thought Oat Groats were raw?
I soak them overnight, and eat them occasionally with fruit and raw peanut butter... Anyone has more info to confirm?
Thanks

If you're wondering if your oat groats are raw, try sprouting them.

thats interesting that bobs red mill says they have to take something out so they dont go rancid...ive purchased the goldmine natural foods really raw oats and they tasted really bitter to me..i wonder if they were rancid.

I didn't see whole groats on Bob's site. We didn't speak specifically about groats. It's likely that they are not steamed, then. It was probably implied that "processed oats"-the steel cut or rolled that they sell are steamed.
In agreement with DRA on testing.
And to be clear, Bob's are not labeled as raw, where the goldmine brand mentioned sounds like they are.
