MMMM, looks good, thanks-- I gotta try this one!
I'm off to check out your article! I'd love to incorporate more sea veggies, but right now I'm only able to do the mild ones with little to no 'sea flavor' - ha. *Ü*

Just to specify -- this is not kelp noodles! Sea spaghetti is unprocessed and looks like spaghetti right out of the water. Read this post from Kate Magic as well: http://lovemagick.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/we-heart-sea-spaghetti/

I see you sell sea spaghetti on that site, but it doesn't list the quantity, just the price.

Thanks!! I fixed it. It gets very big in water and each pouch = 10 servings.

I defo-nitely have to try this.

Aleesha asked me to post the article instead of linking to it, so here is my introduction to sea spaghetti:
Sea Spaghetti - An Introduction to this Nutrition Sea Vegetable
Do you wish there could be an all-raw, all-natural, all-nutritious alternative to pasta? If so, read on.
There is now a wide variety of raw food products which try to fill the gap left by processed, hard to digest wheat pasta. Many people love zucchini, a vegetable that is easy to slice into long pasta strands, and some also enjoy spiral slicing carrots, beets, turnips and more. Many are also enthusiastic about kelp noodles, as they can be stored for a much longer time than zucchini and other veggies, but more than a few people deplore their crunchy texture or their sometimes off-putting smell.
Few raw pasta lovers are aware of yet another pasta substitute, one without a chemical aroma, a crunchy texture, or a short shelf life: sea spaghetti. Sea spaghetti (Himanthalia elongata) is another seaweed wonder. It grows in the natural seaweed fields of Brittany, and unlike kelp noodles, it actually looks like pasta right out of the water!
Processing and Color
Like most sea vegetables, sea spaghetti is a natural dark purple color, and a rich source of chlorophyll and minerals. In comparison, kelp noodles are transparent, as the outer skin is removed. This may seem natural at first, but, if you take a piece of kelp and try to remove the outer skin, you will find that it is not always easy to do so, and you will not end up with the final kelp noodle product.
Packaged kelp noodles have gone through a certain amount of processing, while sea spaghetti is an all-natural, unprocessed, unheated and nutritious product. After harvesting, sea spaghetti is gently dehydrated in a drying cupboard in Brittany and doesn't ever reach 115 degrees.
Texture
Being the natural sea product that they are, sea spaghetti thrive in a cool, water rich environment and will fully saturate in it, yielding long, soft linguine like strands.
Nutrition
Sea spaghetti is more nutritious than kelp noodles, just like unprocessed kelp is more nutritious than kelp noodles. Consider the following numbers:
In a 4 ounce serving, kelp noodles contain dietary fiber (4%), calcium (15%) and iron (4%). The nutrition facts label says little else.
In a 4 ounce serving, sea spaghetti contains dietary fiber (5%), vitamin C (400%), potassium (40%), magnesium (29%), calcium (25%) and iodine (56%). Sea spaghetti is by far one of the most nutritious raw pasta replacement available, and when you consider that each sea spaghetti package contains more than 10 times the above serving size, it really is a bargain!
Taste
Sea spaghetti are no different from other types of seaweed, with a pleasant, fresh taste of the sea. Rinsing will help remove much of the salty flavor, yielding a milder noodle.
Sea spaghetti is delightful in a cashew based tomato-cream sauce with crushed red pepper, or in a fra diavolo-type sauce rich in fresh tomatoes, garlic and parsley. No shrimps needed here! Creamy pesto sauces are also delightful tossed with soft, long stranded sea spaghetti.
Storage
Unlike fresh vegetables and kelp noodles, which need to be refrigerated, sea spaghetti is low temperature dried and shelf stable. You can stock as many packages as you'd like and keep them in a dark, dry cupboard for at least 3 years!
If you've been longing for the long soft strands of grain based pasta and are looking for an easy to digest, nutritious and delicious alternative, you will love sea spaghetti! Kate Magic recommends you “just soak it in the morning & serve it in the evening,” and in her book Evie's Kitchen, Shazzie writes: “I (...) love sea spaghetti, which comes in long strands of tagliatelle-style seaweed. After soaking in water for an hour, it makes the base of one of the most satiating raw meals on the planet.”

Blunder! I entered 4 ounces for the quantities, but while it is 4 ounces for kelp noodles, it is 4 GRAMS for sea spaghetti. To get the correct amount for sea spaghetti, please multiply the sea spaghetti data. 1 ounce = 28 grams. 4 ounces ~ 110 grams. Or just consider that if sea spaghetti is already more nutritious like that, switching the measurements to grams makes it even more nutritious :) :) . Sorry about the confusion!

Of course it's not a coincidence! I only sell what I personally love and eat, nothing else. Sea Spaghetti just happens to be one of my favorite foods, and I had to work hard to get it to the US. :)

Hey Saven :)
What do you mean? Something healthy to add to your diet? Here's my take on it:
1) I am a huge fan of sea veggies. They are not too high in calories at all, but they are packed with nutrition. I love them. I add kelp flakes to pates to make "tuna", I add dulse to salads (it's sooo good when it's soaked with dressing), and of course I eat sea spaghetti with pasta sauces (raw).
2) I love hemp. It's so high in protein and iron, and other hard to get minerals like zinc. I totally recommend eating more hemp. It's fab on salads, and delicious blended with fruits to make a smoothie (had one this morning, I had no morning sickness. Now all I can eat is oranges... not bad I guess).
3) Chia seeds are another food I love. They make a great pudding, delicious milks etc. and they're packed with calcium. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't like chia seeds.
4) Nut milks are great to make a basic "milk and cereal". I love nut milks. Just blend nuts with water and a sweetener, strain through a nut milk bag and that's it, you've got fresh milk.
These are the basics... They're easy to add and use as substitutions. Anyone else, feel free to help me out :)

I got some sea spaghetti in the mail yesterday!
I soaked some for maybe 20 minutes and rinsed really well. I tossed with oil, garlic powder, onion salt, and some pepper. also shook some Parma! on top
It was very delightful! The sea spaghetti is very tender and soft. It has a very slight aftertaste of the sea, but the texture is so nice. MUCH better than kelp noodles IMO!!
thanks Joanna! These noodles are delish! I've been needing to add more sea veggies into my diet, but I can't stand the sea-taste of some of them. But these are nice and mild. two thumbs up!

Hi Jenna! Awesome! Whenever I manage to make some space in my fridge, I get a package to soak, it makes such a nutritious and easy meal. :)
Tonya Kay also soaks them 20 minutes. I had heard that Kate Magic soaks them overnight so that's what I do, but I know Shazzie only soaks them for an hour. It does get soft quickly!

Joanna,
with the sea spaghetti, I'm noticing when I rinse it that the color starts to come off and the noodles get splotchy. Is this normal? or am I rinsing off some good stuff??

Not really, it's like when you wash kale and stuff, some color (chlorophyll) goes away but the end result is still very nutritious. Most of the nutrition is in the cell walls (which is why blending unlocks nutrients, and so does juicing) but when you're rinsing something, the cells walls are intact. Now if you were to massage kale with an acid to break down the cell walls a bit, and then rinse that, you'd lose a lot more nutrition, but what mostly goes away with rinsing sea weeds is the sea salt. Not a big deal ;)

oh, great! thank you!!
I just got my sea spaghetti in the mail Saturday, and Sunday we had the garlic butter recipe. The spaghetti is soooo good! I only ordered 2 packs, but want to get 10 as soon as DH says I can spend the money. BTW, DH took the leftovers to work today for lunch, he's only partially raw, but after eating that said, "I think I could eat like this too."

Once I have soaked the sea spaghetti and drained it really good, how long will it last in the fridge? I have it in a glass bowl covered with a lid.
I soaked it yesterday, but was not home today to eat it, and I'm not sure about tomorrow. So I wanted to make sure so I wouldn't waste it.
Thanks!!

Awesome! If you rinse it and change the water about every 1-2 days, I would think it should last for about a week. Sea veggies do really well in water. But, it never lasted for so long in my house :) I once made an entire package of it with a pesto, and ate one half one day and the other half the next day (covered it with cling wrap in a glass bowl) and it was still perfect!

Here is something awesome:
Rinse the pasta, drain, then toss with sesame seeds, a little garlic, a sprinkle of toasted sesame oil (not raw, obviously, but a tiny amount is needed), some thinly sliced bok choy, some finely diced red peppers, and that's it! :)
Actually... I think I'll do this tonight! I might add some massaged broccoli florets too.

Does anyone know if sea vegetables are easy to digest?
I'd love to try this yummy recipe, but I don't know how soon after a fast I can eat it.(leaving out the nuts/seeds) :)
Sirova
06-07-2010, 07:23 AM
Sea vegetables are very easy to digest! They are low in fat, so to me, they digest almost like a fruit (although they do keep hunger at bay for longer, being so packed with nutrition). It then depends what you put on them. Added oils, nuts, seeds etc will make them harder to digest for example. I love to snack on plain nori sheets, they digest so well and are so nutritious (and delicious!).

Thank you Sirova :)
I guess that means I'll be holding off for a little while on this recipe - but, I will be adding strips of nori to my tomato soup that I'll be having when I break my fast.
I've been craving sea veggies for almost a week now and I'm definitely ready for something a bit more hardy than green juice :D

Is there another way to prepare sea spaghetti that still tastes mighty fine? Something simple and easy, like chopping some tomatoes and garlic on top, then drizzling olive oil and adding spices? (that's what I do usually for zucchini noodles :p) I would love to try eating sea vegetables regularly, but I have a hard time getting past the whole "taste like the ocean" part. If I get some sea spaghetti, I don't want to have a big heavy meal every time I make it. :o

Drolemil, that would be fabulous! Be sure to rinse the sea spaghetti if you aren't a fan of the sea veggies' taste (like if you don't like to eat dulse out of the bag -- although I find sea spaghetti a lot milder than dulse. I'm a big sea weed fan either way).
