They kinda tried to bash raw foods on this latest episode of House saying that the patient had elevated levels of copper from eating too many nuts and seeds. Not cool

Another episode of House from the earlier seasons had some offensive stuff about raw foods too.
A young ("hippy", of course) couple had their baby on a raw food diet and she had basically been starved into developing pneumonia. The parents had their child taken off them by social services.

 More good reasons not to watch House.

What's the point? It's negative. This forum is about supporting raw food.

Representations of raw foodism in the media?

I think it's relevant, I was just flipping through channels and I don't know what I was watching but there was an episode last week where a woman had cancer and there was a scene where a friend tried to bring her produce but they wouldn't let her and she had to leave the hospital. She got into the elevator and was pointing to the bag of produce and was saying "It's from the Earth" and then the elevator doors closed.

From Alissa's rules for posting ~

...We are here to support the raw food diet, not try and refute it and we do not want a lot of scare tactics and fear-based posts and sites listed here.

i didn't think it was portrayed too bad - it didn't even make up the big point of the episode.

This isn't about bashing raw foods at all...someone just wanted to bring up the episode of house. I get that this is about Alissa and about being positive, but why be a Nazi about it...someone made a comment and dropped the issue. Done deal.

Seriously. What is the harm of mentioning something about a tv show that misinforms people about raw? I REALLY doubt the op was bringing this up against Alissa OR what she is trying to promote. Last I checked, this wasn't a cult and nobody is dissing raw food! Now I remember why I stayed away from this forum for so long...:(

That's what the harm is ~ it's disinformation.

O.k., I've had my say. Carry on!

Don't know if you saw this whole episode, but the end of it was that the raw foodism was not the cause and the hospital had to let social services know it was not the problem.

I enjoy house - but I'm a big fan of hugh laurie - back from his black adder days....

They're not dissing on raw food diets. They're dissing on poorly planned raw food diets. Check da facts they're all around you.

Hey I'm not bashing raw food at all. I only mentioned it because its a reference to raw food in the media and I actually was put off by it. I know that in the end raw food wasn't the cause but its little misconceptions like these that actually make people think poorly of raw food and I for one wish the great benefits were portrayed more often.

I was simply defending the OP's right to mention that she/he saw something on TV about raw, and that she/he was disappointed in how it was portrayed. I did not see the show in question, I simply felt that people were starting to make a mountain out of a molehill...

DRA, yep...I am well aware of the facts :) Spent years studying raw, I was simply trying to support the OP. I think there are people that tend to get a bit over the top about things others say wrt raw, and really...you have to do what's best for you, and we all simply need to respect that we are each individuals.

really? do you think the show was rev? cause i sure didn't see that in the show. it was mentioned that she's a raw foodist... mentioned the copper and that was it. it wasn't mentioned again the show.

i guess our idea of bashing is different. :p

I can't speak to this particular episode, but the producers of the show draw heavily from documented medical cases. I've talked to doctors who absolutely despise doctor/hospital shows for all of the inaccuracies within, but seem to respect this one.

From the reading I've done, it's certainly possible for it to happen to someone, under the "perfect storm" conditions.

Does it mean it will happen to everyone who eats raw? No. Everyone who eats lots of nuts and seeds? Not necessaril. And it's not scare tactics, it's just possible, and some raw-ers do eat tons of nuts and seeds.

Balance.

First of all, I didn't say "bashing" although I responded to someone who did ~ I said "disinformation" which it truly is ... BUT, it is negative connotation which is NOT what this board is about. It doesn't matter that they talk about overeating nuts or whatever. It's that people who are watching hear the word "raw"... they don't differentiate between healthy raw and not so and WE, as viewers, don't get to dispute the difference.

One thing good about "House" though, sure shows me why I don't go to doctors. They're good at practicing and guessing.

well actually... you did in this post (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showpost.php?p=588171&postcount=20).

but it's neither here nor there...

honestly i was just happy to HEAR the word raw being described as how someone eats on tv... period.

i figure, if someone hears it... then they might just research it... or... when they hear it again, they might think "oh man i've heard of that before... not sure where but... hmmm wonder what it is???"

;) but i'm a glass half full kinda girl. i look for the positive in things... (not saying anyone else isn't - just talkin' bout myself is all) http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x87/recyclinggoddess/dance013.gif

To be fair, the media portrays alot of inaccurate things. It's not really a go-to place for factual information on how the world turns.

DopeRawAbundance: agree w you on that.
I think a lot of serials especially resort to general stereotypes. I don't know if it is purposely done as they are aiming at hitting recognition response in their audience and they take the averagely held view or whether the screen writers are just ignorant themselves. I wonder whether it is the former as especially for these big serials the screenwriters often have a very good education in the humanities (poss more likely to be informed on issues the average mainstream person would know little about/ rely on stereotypes as their knowledge of? - I could be assuming here ;)) I saw an episode of Doc Martin, a serial in the UK where they completely bagged out home birth as a possible decent alternative to giving birth in hospital. Even if they did come down on the side of hospital birth, if it had been treated with accuracy (even bearing in mind the whole subject was background to the protagonist's dramas), it would have been fine. As it was the treatment was so superficial and resorted to caricature stereotyping of home birthing as a militant women's wacky way out thing. I'm on neither side in particular of the homebirthing debate but I just felt contempt for a series I had previously thought decent..

I just mention the above as a poss example of general shallow stereotyping and cheap laughs got my mainstream media by putting down something which is vaguely heard of but which is not really known much about by the general population.

I just saw it tonight. What stood out to me was that when her switch to raw food came up it was specifically referred to as a "healthier diet". Sounds positive to me.
