I'm still learning about growing wheatgrass, I've been growing it since summer...
But I'm curious about this:
4. My wheatgrass won't grow much taller and i cut them as soon as i can to avoid bitter taste but still it taste bitter
I let mine grow until it gets 7-8" tall, then cut it and juice it. I only take 1 cutting from the tray and then toss it. Can you give more details about cutting it?

Mine grows for around 5-6" and won't grow further. I cut them usually when it is around 6". i cut it everyday for about 3-4 days to juice fresh.
Between I knew DebB would be first to respond :)
Thanks

:D I do posting about wheatgrass! My last 2 batches (I plant 2-3 large trays at a time), I cut at 5-6" too. I just cut 3 trays worth yesterday. I tried growing them without soil, but it wasn't working well for me, so I ended up actually adding soil and they did better.
I hope an experienced WG grower can help you out here. But I'm wondering... and I'm just thinking out loud, I don't know this to be true -- but what if your WG is mature at 5-6", but by leaving it planted for several more days that's when it starts to turn bitter?
The first cutting - is that bitter tasting too?
I also use the hard red winter wheat berries and mine is really sweet. But I have a big problem with mold.
Always something....
I received this reply on YouTube to a video I posted on (about growing WG and such):
There is a great video called "Growing Wheat grass, Sunflower, Pea, & Buckwheat Sprouts" by Michael Bergonzi
I bought it from the Hippocrates Health Institute online store. It's on the second page of the CD's & DVD section.
It shows you how to build the shelves, grow the sprouts, and make the juice. I highly recommend it.
Good luck!
So, I went here (http://store.hippocratesinst.org/Growing-Wheatgrass-Sunflower-Pea-Buckwheat-Sprouts-DVD-by-Michael-Bergonzi-P194C3.aspx) to take a look. I'm going to request that my library buys this DVD. If not, I may buy it because I want to do this right...
Boy, guess I got off on (yet another) tangent. *Ü*

Yes the first cutting was bitter tasting too. Don't know what is the issue.
May be i gonna try different wheatberries and see how it taste.
I bought the current wheatberries from ebay with 20 pounds for around $24.

Try hard spring wheat from "Mums" in Canada. They ship to both Canada and the United States. That is all I use and I have great success without soil.
Take care, Paul.

I too buy from Mums-the best IMO, all my crops are green and luscious..I am growing with lights and some with window light to brighten up my dull livingroom at this time of year ;-) GET THIS! I have pics of my last experiment. I bought clay pots from dollar store and clear glass cereal bowls. We homeschool so we experiment growing it in everthing...recycled stuff etc. small, big, my 8 yr old grows some for the cat ;-) Anyhow I planted 3 glass bowls and 3 clay pots and put them in my livingroom windows. I use the grow lights for the cafeteria trays and black plastic grow trays. Anyhow...no kidding at the end the ones in the clear glass were at least 2" taller! also the clear glass has no mold at all when grown on my main floor. I cannot grow the big trays up here because its too hot I have so many windows- so I grow the flats in the cold cement floor basement/garage area with the lights-I harvest around 7-9ish" depending. I use both hard spring, and hard winter-haven't decided which one I like best, plus barley which is super duper bitter, not as green, nor as tall - LOL

Hi Wendy;
Glad to hear of your success. Are you growing with or without soil? I also tried barley for a while but did not like it and came back to hard spring wheat.
Take care, Paul.

Seems the problem was with the seed. I tried different RED HARD WINTER WHEATBERRIES & it worked perfectly. No more bitter taste.
MORAL OF THE STORY : What u pay is what u get :)

Well, don't throw it in the garbage, or even your compost. Winter wheat is a good cover crop in your gardem. Sell or give to someone with a garden if you don't have one!

Sure I will do so. I was hesitating to so before but now i changed my mind.
Thanks for the advise.

What organic potting mix are you using? I don't know if that has anything to do with the bitterness, I just don't want you to get duped... Miracle Gro's potting mix, for example, I've heard nothing but bad about. It would payoff more to make your own mixes.
Do you have a wormbin, or a compost pile? That would be an absolutely amazing way to start making the best potting mixes you can comprehend, while also making use of your raw scraps. Lord knows we generate a lot of 'em, I fill up a large paper bag in a couple of days easily.

The only organic potting mix I could get at the store was Miracle Gro---almost seems like an oxymoron...like McDonald's organic orsomething...LOL, but I got it.
I've heard (and experienced) that when you use your own garden soil, since it's not sterile you can get some mold issues. So, for doing wheatgrass (In the winter only - in the summer, I do it outside), I've decided to go with the organic store-bought potting mix. sigh.
I've been happy with it, but I also add: DE, kelp, and azomite to it.
