Anyone ever get food poisoning from eating raw? My sister was attempting the 30-day raw challenge, and apparently got food poisoning! She wasn't sure which food caused it, so ended up throwing out quite a bit of raw staples ($75 worth!!).
So of course, now it's difficult to encourage her to stay raw, after that very negative experience.. I feel so sad that she was so into it, then that happened..

That is a darn shame. Maybe later after the bad feeling fades she will come back to it.
I'm curious, was she eating dehydrated foods or was she all fresh?

She was eating mostly fresh, but some dehydrated bread and crackers. I feel really bad because she was so excited to try and now, has had such a horrible experience while on raw.... I am very sad about it! :(

Just a thought, but is she sure it was food poisoning, and not detox? :)
When I went Raw in 2008, I got food poisoning after eating a stuffed mushroom (turns out I'm intolerant of portabellos). It literally made me not want to eat raw for weeks afterward, but then I remembered that I had gotten food poisoning about twenty times eating SAD.
:D :D
Once on raw... twenty times on SAD... hmmm.... :D

I think her doctor said it was def food poisoning.. It was several weeks into the raw challenge, too..

Ive had no food poisoning in six months of this. She could have come in contact with any of the same bacterias that cause most food poisoning by human/phone/doorknob contact, then hand to mouth. I mean no disrespect to your sister, but have you talked to her about safe food handling? There's a good chance it was from food that was contaminated by others handling it in the store. This is an increased risk of eating so much openly displayed fresh produce. We have to be more diligent since we are not cooking the germs to death. Washing everything before cutting them open or peeling them is important. Bulk bin goods are a big source of contamination too. It would benefit her to look at correcting any faulty food prep habits, as well as purchasing choices (the bins), before changing back to less nutritious foods. Maybe a few gentle words with her about that will win her back.

Doctors can be wrong. When I was pregnant with my daughter (and hadn't realized it yet), I had two doctors in two different states (as I was traveling) tell me that I had food poisoning. Well...my "food poisoning" is now 11 years old. Doctors...

A few things here ~
Has she ever gotten food poisoning eating cooked? did she give that up?
What specifically did she eat? I've tossed my cookies on mushrooms ~ twice. Wont eat 'em ever again.
As someone else said, did she wash her produce? Was it prepared on a wooden cutting board where raw chicken or meat was prepared?
There are so many variables here and without knowing the whole story, we're just blowing smoke in trying to figure it out.

It might be that she got poisoned not by raw.During raw sessions,in case before them she ate less raw stuff(say, vegetarian, cooked, etc),body experiences large changes.Poisons start leaving the body as digestion, accustomed to much munching, during sudden jumps into rawness crawls the lost appetitic food,& in its "anger" goes digesting WHAT IS THERE to same poisongly enjoy. Now the new food in this case are oldpoisons, laying as waste in the body.Like this the latter enter the blodstream, digested instead of tasty poisonos unraw foods. The disgust, ment to leavethe body soon,in the meanwhile causes the "effect of poisoning" Yoursister experienced.Want proceesion from me?Mail me

I had similar issues with fresh collard greens. I'm very aware of what I eat & make sure it's good. Any soft spots are cut away, wash everything. I do know someone who's daughter had salmonella from fresh cut produce at a grocery store. MD kept saying it was fp...who ever cut the fruit used the same knife they used to cut up raw chicked without cleaning it!!!!! I do not buy pre-cut produce. I'm funny about salad bars too.

That sucks. I've eaten my fair share of raw foods that have made me pukey-sick, but never had actual food poisoning. That's sad that it's turned her against raw foods though. Maybe just by continuing the lifestyle you will be a good example to her and show her what a great way of life it truly is. :)

Is it possible she ate some sprouted beans? Some varieties must be cooked before eating....

You know what I'm thinking....... maybe she just had a plain old stomach virus or stomach flu, but then offered the info to the dr. that she started eating raw. SO that planted the seed in his head that it 'had to' be from the 'raw food'..

Ah ha.... Violin - that, too, has happened to me. :D I had a bit of the flu last season, and my friends all instantly blamed my diet. Just cracks me UP when that happens.
If you're stuffing your face with macaroni and hot dogs, then it MUST be anything BUT your diet causing your problems.
But don't go near the spinach and bananas!!! Oh nooooo... that stuff'll kill ya!!! :D

HAHHA! In my sister's defense.. she IS a vegetarian and doesn't eat tons of junk food.. (though, prob cooked now that she thinks raw caused food poisoning for her). But, at least, she is up for doing the raw challenge again..I think she will just be taking a break from raw, since she connects it with the sickness she had, but is willing to give it another try..

I hope she does better this time around. Get her a copy of Alissa's book!!!
So many of the fears ingrained in us by our surrounding Culture can be released/removed with self-education, and Alissa's book remains the #1 resource I can recommend for newbies to Raw. And I've been reading a TON of books lately. :D

I know that my sister will try again, but I have to be careful not to push.
She is very high raw right now with lots of juices, salads, fruits, etc.. She has had a cooked veg burger, but is really doing well, overall, I think..
