View Full Version : Irish Moss Problem -- Compost or Use it?

Hi -- I read the posts here about Irish moss and making deserts from the Cafe Gratitude cookbook. They were helpful -- and that's where I learned that I made a mistake w/the prep. I assumed I should rinse the moss after soaking for 24 hours.

So THAT is why my lemon meringue pie didn't work out ;)

The cookbook should have warned about that, as when you soak nuts you just assume you are also supposed to rinse. But I guess that washes a lot of the carageenan away...

So I still have a nice big blob of the moss left, that has been unfortunately rinsed, and I'm not sure if it should just go in the compost or if there's something I can do with it still. Seems like a waste just to put it in compost!

Thanks for any feedback,

Jillian

There are no wastes in nature! The minerals and such would do your compost, and in turn your plants that you use it on, some good.

But aside from that, you could just throw it in a smoothie or some other kind of recipe, whatever you think the taste would work with (I've never had Irish Moss).

Maybe you could have a seaweed bath. You can soak up the minerals that way.

It is still edible and has great nutritional benefits. I met a woman that puts Irish Moss in her smoothies. She blends the moss with water and stores it the fridge. It makes her smoothies extra smooth.
